Success Stories

Update from Summer 2010

"The boys are off to a good start, no tears from either of them! Yippee! Much more positive outlooks from them both about the school year. Brandon even said he liked his class and his teacher is awesome. Still doesn’t like the “work,” but we can live with that! Sylvan has definitely helped Caden with his confidence. He told me that he was “really enjoying his Magic Tree House book” that he was reading at school. He said, “I don’t usually read chapter books but I'm really into it.” Later he had to take (to school) a bag with 3 items that represented him and he said he was going to put a book in because, “I like to read!” Praise the Lord!! I know he has a ways to go, but those little things have told me that this summer was totally worth it!"

Success After a Tramatic Brain Injury

"On September 9, 2007, my 16-year-old daughter, Carie, was in a terrible car accident. Among her many injuries was a severe Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). On June 7, 2009, she graduated high school as a mentally handicapped 18 year old. In August 2009, her neurologist told us that this is all she will ever be and that we needed to face facts. As her mother, I couldn’t understand how this was acceptable for her doctor and the school system. If she was still capable of learning then why must we accept that she could never get better?

In August 2009, I started looking for a way to help Carie to improve and remembered my sister taking her daughter to a learning center for reading. Immediately we contacted the same center, the Sylvan Learning Center. When contacted, I stated that I was not looking for miracles for Carie but I was looking for help. The Sylvan team immediately tested Carie and discovered she was elementary level at best and then proceeded to give us the first sign of hope in a long time. Although they had never really dealt with anything close to the severity of Carie’s head injuries, they were willing to set up a special program and help in any way they could. Carie was a test case for them and their abilities.

Much to everyone’s surprise, Carie exceeded our expectations and now there is real hope that she will be able to reach her dreams of before the accident; to go to college. Only the Sylvan Learning Center was willing to take a chance on Carie and had faith that she could continue to learn. But even if Carie never makes it to college, she will be able to live a normal life thanks to the dedication of their staff.

Thank you Sylvan Learning Center for giving my daughter her future, and for giving me my daughter back."

Bridging Homeschool to Public School

"(Sylvan) met Ellen in her 7th grade year. Ellen had been exclusively homeschooled. Due to three years of compounded family tragedies, she had fallen behind in a lot of areas. She was writing at a 2nd grade level, reading at a 10th grade level, and her math was all over the map. The girl could not spell to save her life, and the Sylvan teachers worked extensively with her to find and fill dozens of skill gaps from 2nd grade through 7th grade (including a lot of work on basic multiplication and fractions) in hopes that she could have an easier transition starting public school in 8th grade the following fall. Ellen and I were both extremely concerned with her ability to keep up in eight grade, with all of the catching up she'd done. Well, since starting 8th grade at Delton Kellogg this past fall, Ellen is absolutely thriving. She tested into Algebra One for high school credit, and has maintained only A's and B's. She's having sleepovers with friends, attends events, and recently did dramatic original poetry reading for the talent show. Due to her MAP scores and good grades and work habits, Ellen was encouraged to apply to the Battle Creek Area Math and Science center. She completed BCAMSC testing in January, and received a letter (saying) that her academics were impressive enough to warrant a personal interview, which she will have in March. she tested in the 92nd percentile in math and the 98th percentile in science on the Stanford tests issued by the Center. It's astounding to me that these results were achieved by a child who could not multiply or write a cohesive paragraph when she started at Sylvan in the fall of 2008.

I know that without Ellen's time at Sylvan, her "catch up" arc would have hindered her progress....and her talents would not have been discovered in time for this opportunity. We want to thank you for your excellent care in finding and resolving her skill gaps, and laying the ground work for good study skills and an enjoyable first educational experience with real teachers away from home.

Thank you again for all your efforts on Ellen's behalf, and for your extremely significant contribution to her success.

Mary J."

Bridging Homeschool to Public School - UPDATE

"Hope you remember us, my daughter Ellen J. attended Sylvan twice a week for the 2008-2009 school year. She had a LOT of skills gaps due to our home school studies being interrupted by multiple family deaths. In 7th grade, she could spell and write at a third grade level, could not multiply, and felt incredibly self critical due to these deficits. After a year at Sylvan, she felt confident enough, and had mastered enough basic skills to feel comfortable trying public school in the eighth grade starting the fall of 2009. We were still concerned about Ellen's ability to keep up with a regular eighth grade class, but felt much more comfortable with her degree of preparedness. We felt much less like we were throwing her to the sharks, and felt she had a chance of maintaining passing grades while she continued to "catch up".

Today was Ellen's last day of eighth grade. So, how did she do?

At the honor's assembly yesterday, Ellen was recognized as one of the top 8 gold standard students in her class of 126. She was given an award for her grade point average, which has consistently been above 3.8, the principal's award for community service, an art award, a physical education award, and an award for excellence in language, reading and math on the MEAPS. Ellen received an award for completing Algebra One for high school credit this year. In addition, Ellen completed testing and interviewing, and was accepted to The Battle Creek Math and Science Center. Her final marking period GPA was a 4.0. Ellen's art was featured on the back cover of DKMS's year book this year.

In short, Ellen's success and achievement this year has ASTOUNDED us.

I cannot begin to express our gratitude for making Ellen's first formal learning environment so supportive and so effective at identifying skills we had overlooked. I do not think that Ellen would have achieved the terrific success she has, without Sylvan's help filling the gaps and creating a bridge for formal education.

Once again, thank you."

Thanks Sylvan!

"My husband and I are very thankful for Sylvan Learning of Battle Creek. If it wasn't for the help and support from the wonderful teachers, our daughter wouldn't have the confidence to read. She is in the 4th grade now and very bright, but struggled with reading since the 2nd grade. I heard about Sylvan and decided to call. We made an appointment and found out she was reading at a 1st grade level. From April through October, we drove to Sylvan (for tutoring). Now, she loves to read!"
