Brenda graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and a minor in Sociology. She taught for two years in Minneapolis and then moved to Seattle with her husband. She taught for five years in Washington, then decided to stay at home while working actively volunteering in the schools. Brenda presides as the Executive Director of the Bellevue, Renton, and Sammamish centers.
Shaila grew up in Richland, Washington and went to Richland High School, where she spent all of her extra time in dance classes. She received her B.A.E in Secondary Education Studies from Eastern Washington University. She then moved to Spokane, where she worked at the Spokane Sylvan. After two years in Spokane, she moved to the Puget Sound area.
A native of Minnesota, Riley received her degree in Elementary Education from Concordia College in Minnesota, with a specialty in Middle School Social Studies. She moved to the Puget Sound area after getting married. Riley has always loved working with children and wanted a career where she could make a difference. She enjoys Sylvan's positive learning environment. In her spare time Riley enjoys reading, golfing and movies.
A native of Hawaii, Christina earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English and her Masters degree in Teaching from Portland's Concordia University. Christina likes the friendly community environment at Sylvan and especially likes teaching writing and math. In her free time she can be found hiking, cycling, writing, playing guitar and traveling to Hawaii to visit family.
Chris graduated with a Bachelors in Zoology from the University of Washington. He enjoys teaching math more than any other subject; like an alchemist, he transforms reluctant math students at Sylvan into eager mathematicians, and enjoys giving kids tools they can use to solve problems and think logically. In addition to his passion for algorithms, Chris also enjoys photography, reading, and juggling.
Tori was born in Seattle and grew up in Des Moines, WA. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Washington State University and her Master of Arts degree in Education from the University of Washington. Tori wanted to be a teacher from a young age and enjoys the opportunity to work with so many students at Sylvan. In her free time she enjoys traveling, spending time with her husband and young daughter, and reading a lot of books.
Kelsey graduated from Pacific Lutheran University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education. After graduating, she worked as a substitute teacher in the Sumner and Federal Way school districts and as a day-camp counselor for the Federal Way Community Center. Kelsey loves watching her students experience genuine learning. In her free time, she enjoys reading a variety of literature, playing with her young daughter, and attending Sounders games.
Linda has taught at Sylvan for over ten years, and enjoys the close rapport between students and teachers; she feels children in this environment will become confident, independent learners. She graduated from Central Washington University with a Bachelors in Education and a minor in Early Childhood Education, and has taken several education classes since then. In her spare time, she enjoys exercising and playing soccer, and for many years has volunteered at fundraisers and in the classroom.
A native of Renton, Aaron earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics from Western Washington University and his Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado - Boulder. During college, Aaron tutored math at the campus tutoring center. His favorite subject to teach is upper-level math. He enjoys seeing the light go on when a student really 'gets it' for the first time. In his free time, Aaron enjoys reading, baseball, astronomy and singing.
Mary Lou graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from the College of St. Teresa in Winona, Minnesota, and has completed post-graduate work at UW. She taught for seven years in the midwest, and for over 27 years in WA. She has received the Golden Acorn award, a PTA award for service to children, and the “Teacher of the Year” award from Tillicum Middle School, and worked as a liaison between the Bellevue School District and the American University Women’s Branch.
Melissa earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English Secondary Education from Saginaw State University, MI. She is an experienced tutor in reading, math, music and college writing. She is passionate about education, and enjoys the challenge of teaching students using a variety of methods and instructional approaches. Melissa spends her free time painting, writing, and reading the works of William Faulkner and Jen Lancaster.
April has been interested in teaching since she was a child. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English and her teaching credential from San Diego State University. She taught for six years in California before moving to the Seattle area. In her free time April enjoys reading, running, making beaded jewelry, cooking, and spending time with friends and family.
Tessa was born in Seattle and except for her time at college has lived in the Puget Sound area her whole life. She earned her degree in Elementary Education from Washington State University. From a young age, Tessa has wanted to be a teacher and has always loved working with children. She believes that all students have the ability to learn, and her main goal as a teacher is to provide them with the resources and approaches to learn. When not at Sylvan Tessa enjoys baking, scrapbooking and teaching science.
