"I had a very joyous moment yesterday when Mitchell came home from school. He had some math homework to do; he was enthused about doing it because he actually understood it and said that yesterday in math class he got all his work right. As a parent with a child who has struggled with math for years, I cannot express how good it felt to hear my son say ‘I get it’!! I just want to say a big thank you to Sylvan for helping Mitchell gain this confidence."

Children today play video games, send emails, and look after their virtual pets online. They spend less time writing in journals, creating stories, and practicing handwriting.
Research shows that handwriting is important because it teaches children how to express themselves through writing. Children with subpar writing skills often produce shorter and simpler compositions, and their writing fluency can be traced back to elementary school. From primary through grade four, children do not easily separate the processes of writing and creative thinking. If kids have to focus on how to form letters then the creative process suffers.
“We know that schools have such a wide range of goals to achieve, it is impossible to devote as much time as teachers might like to the practice of various skills – this includes handwriting,” said Louisa Horne, Executive Director of the Sylvan Learning Centres in Halifax, Dartmouth and Bedford.
The amount of handwriting practice has greatly decreased over the years. Students receive an average of 15 minutes of handwriting a day, much less than the recommended 45 minutes from the 1960’s and 1970’s.
"It's my understanding that formal handwriting instruction, for the most part, has disappeared," said Marvin Simner, a University of Western Ontario psychologist and author of Promoting Skilled Handwriting.
Educators are concerned because evidence is mounting that handwriting fluency is a key element of learning. Emily Knapton, director of program development at Handwriting Without Tears (HWT), believes that "when kids struggle with handwriting, it filters into all their academics. Spelling becomes a problem; math becomes a problem because they reverse their numbers. All of these subjects would be much easier for these kids to learn if handwriting was an automatic process."
With the increase in keyboarding, many students do not value handwriting but educators know that it is still a critical skill. “Colleges and universities still give handwritten exams. Many workplaces still require completion of handwritten documents or forms and we know that some certification or professional application tests include a handwritten essay,” said Horne. This makes handwriting programs more valuable to students.
“Sylvan Learning Centre is delighted to partner with HWT as we focus on delivering the best curriculum to our students. This leading program, used by over 100,000 students in Canada, allows us to offer that same expertise to students in Nova Scotia as an enhancement to our individualized academic programs. Our goal is always to help students maximize their success and the use of HWT with the Sylvan Writing program will give them the excellent writing skills they need for future success,” said Horne.
This collaboration will give more students the advantages of good handwriting, better sentence structure, and improved grammar. With the Sylvan Academic Writing program students receive instruction from certified teachers and complete engaging writing activities. They master the basics of spelling and vocabulary and develop age-appropriate writing skills including effective paragraph development. Handwriting Without Tears uses fun, entertaining, and educationally sound principles to make handwriting an easy and automatic skill for all students. Children work on pencil grip, body awareness, posture, and self-confidence.
Using the Handwriting Check-up, Sylvan’s education experts are able to quickly assess a child’s handwriting ability. By combining Handwriting Without Tears and Sylvan’s writing program, the end result is well rounded writing skills – a lifelong benefit that will help students succeed in school and throughout their adult lives.
