Connor - Middleton, Nova Scotia - Grade 10
When Connor's mother began researching tutors three years ago, she was hesitant because the closest Sylvan Learning Centre was located two hours away from home. She opted to obtain additional support from the school system. After Connor’s first report card in 2007 illustrated his continuous struggle in reading and writing, she again researched her tutoring options on the Internet.
“I found that our local Sylvan Learning Centre now offers Sylvan Online – the perfect solution for our busy family,” comments Connor’s mother, Stacey. She adds, “I immediately called Sylvan to enroll my son. Like most of today’s teenagers, Connor is very computer-oriented and excited about using the latest technology. The flexible timing also allows me to schedule his classes around his sports and band practices.” Since February 2007, Connor has obtained reading tutoring from the convenience of home.
When Connor began his online classes, he had difficulty processing information and explaining his thoughts in writing. “I needed help understanding information,” explains fourteen year-old Connor. “Sylvan is now working with me to build my grades in all of my classes because they repeat skills until I finally comprehend. My tutors ask me to explain my reasoning and this helps me to remember the problem-solving process.”
