Alcoa High School Teacher Awarded Mini Grant

March 6, 2009

Alcoa High School teacher Chad Coker was named recipient of the Spring 2009 Sylvan Learning Center of Maryville Mini Grant program. Today he was presented with a check for $250 to help fund his a project for his students.
Mr. Coker, Director of the Freshman Academy at Alcoa, turned in the grant application to Sylvan about a month prior, explaining how he planned to challenge his students to create a small business, starting with a creative idea and following it through to a complete and workable business plan which they will present to their classmates at the end of the course.
"We work to enourage a love of learning and creative ways that teachers can engage students. Our Mini Grant program provides incentive and extra resources for teachers to achieve that goal", says Lee Pierce, Executive Director of East Tennessee Sylvans and Blount County resident.
Sylvan's Mini Grants are awarded twice yearly to area teachers. Applications are available in most school offices, or by contacting Robin Henderson at 681-0121.
