Meet the Tutors
Our Sylvan trained and certified tutors are dedicated to your child’s success. Working together with you, we will:
- Pinpoint your child’s learning needs using the Sylvan Skills Assessment®
- Develop a personalized learning plan based on your child’s goals
- Offer unique insights about what will work for your child
- Teach each lesson the way your child learns best
- Build a relationship with your child to provide learning that’s fun, engaging and rewarding
Joan K. Rainer
President
Joan opened the first Sylvan in an urban location in the country. She graduated from Temple University and had a career in educational publishing before opening her first Sylvan Learning Center in 1989. She now oversees operations at both the Northeast and Center City Centers and has been acknowledged by Sylvan for her top-performing territory.
Kathleen M. Maroney
Center Director
Kathleen brings award-winning customer service skills and 20 years of Sylvan experience, including 6 years as a consultant for Sylvan Corporate, to the Northeast Center. She graduated from Kutztown University with a degree in Elementary Education, taught Catholic school for four years, and worked as a corporate trainer before joining Sylvan in 1991.
Natalie Murphy
Director of Education
Natalie taught for the public school system for three years before coming to Sylvan as a teacher in 2007, becoming Director of Education in 2009. She holds degrees in Elementary and Early Childhood Education from Temple University.
Brigid O'Neill
Program Coordinator
Brigid has been with Sylvan since 1993: as a Center Director for one year, Director of Education for ten years, and for the past several years as the coordinator of our busy Supplemental Services programs. She holds a Bachelors degree in English from Boston College and a Masters in Education from Lesley College in Cambridge.
Christina Gaffney
Administrator
Christina previously worked for Sylvan for six years as a teacher, test center administrator, and Director of Education. She has a BS in Education from Temple University and taught English at an area enrichment center for over 10 years before returning to Sylvan last year as the office administrator.
