Wireless Internet Now Available
June 2008 - As a service to our Sylvan of Surprise families we are pleased to announce that we are now offering free wireless internet service in the lobby of our Learning Center. Now you can surf the web, check your email, or do anything else you desire from your laptop computer or other Wi-Fi enabled device. For your safety and protection our network is password protected so please ask for assistance in getting set up initially.
Enhance Your Vocabulary and Save the World!
(March, 2008)Get ready for vocabulary practice with a twist; www.freerice.com helps you improve your vocabulary while helping put an end to world hunger. Every time an individual defines a word correctly the organization donates 20 grains of rice to charity. The rice is distributed by the United Nations World Food Program (WFP). The World Food Program is the world’s largest food aid agency, working with over 1,000 other organizations in over 75 countries. In addition to providing food, the World Food Program helps hungry people to become self-reliant so that they escape hunger for good. Wherever possible, the World Food Program buys food locally to support local farmers and the local economy. Since October 7, 2007 www.freerice.com has donated over 23,031,047,850 grains of rice to the UN WFP.
The website features 55 vocabulary levels (from beginner to extremely advanced) and utilizes an adaptive interface which continually adjusts the difficulty in order to provide the user with words they will find challenging. This is a great way to increase your knowledge while doing something positive for the world. So far the Surprise Sylvan staff has donated over 10,000 grains of rice (and growing)!
