Strong algebra skills indicate a student’s future success in college. That’s why Sylvan’s customized Algebra 1 program enhances these skills and provides the foundation for success in more advanced high school courses. Students will learn and apply essential algebraic concepts including:
•Analysis of patterns and functions
•Graphing and mathematical connections
•Problem solving, critical thinking and reasoning
Students also complete exercises using graphing calculators to enhance their understanding of algebraic concepts and processes
Sylvan Geometry is designed for students who need to catch up or want to get ahead in a math curriculum. Major areas of study include:

•Triangles and quadrilaterals
•Circles and three-dimensional figures
•Similar triangles and transformations
•Advanced triangle applications
A wide variety of instructional materials promote the ability to use advanced algebraic concepts rather than repeat memorized facts and functions. Major areas of study include:

Sylvan Algebra 2 students must display mastery of basic math, algebra and geometry prior to enrollment in Algebra 2.

Sylvan’s Academic Writing Program helps students in grades 4-12 master a variety of writing formats and styles, including descriptive essays, comparative passages, persuasive writing, expository writing, summaries and outlines. The program will also include exercises in:

•Vocabulary and paragraph structure
•Essay development
Students learn and practice a proven process to good writing: pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing and publishing. Computer-based assignments help students develop and master important writing skills.
All students, regardless of skill level, can benefit from improved study skills. Sylvan’s highly effective Study Skills Program helps students in elementary school, middle high, and high school develop a personal study process that works best for their individual learning styles and academic needs. Using assignments from school, students learn and implement:

In most centers, enrolled Sylvan students have the benefit of receiving homework support when they come to the center for their regular tutoring sessions. We may devote a small amount of time each tutoring hour to providing homework support.
