Sylvan Learning of Weston Celebrates Hispanic Heritage

In conjunction with National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, Sylvan Learning of Weston is pleased to further its commitment for the second year to the Hispanic Community with their 2nd annual “FIESTA” event by participating as a presenting sponsor of this cultural festival to celebrate the achievements, influence and contributions of the Hispanic community.

Everyone is invited to join “FIESTA” on Sunday, October 30th from 11am-4pm at the Sheinberg Family YMCA of Weston. This FREE, fun, family-friendly event includes performances of folkloric dance from many Latin American countries, as well as Spain. Through their performances and music, the dancers will entertain and educate the audience with the ceremonies, rituals and stories of their rich cultures. Arts and crafts will also be on display. Delicious ethnic Latin American dishes will be available from local vendors.

The “FIESTA” event information is available online at http://www.facebook.com/FIESTAHispanicHeritage

Closing the Summer Reading Gap: Parent Resources

"Students say that the number one reason why they do not read more is because they cannot find books they like to read"

Did you know that your student may be a victim of summer reading loss? Students can lose up to three months’ worth of reading progress over one summer. And, if you take into consideration all summers combined, students could possibly lose 1.5 years’ worth of reading progress. Summer reading loss can be defeated through time spent reading with your student, providing a variety of reading material, using various Internet resources, and encouraging them to just read for fun and the pleasure of learning!

For example, a student who reads 21 minutes per day outside of school reads almost 2 million words per year, whereas a student who reads less than a minute per day outside of school reads only 8,000 to 21,000 words per year.

FALCON COVE MIDDLE SCHOOL’S SUMMER READING LIST

Created in collaboration with: Falcon Cove:  Language Arts Department, Reading Department, Media Specialist, ELL Coordinator and Reading Coach.

Falcon Cove Middle School strives to encourage students to maintain and improve their academic abilities year round. In order to achieve this goal, students are required to read a minimum of one novel over the summer. All students are encouraged to select high interest books which are both grade and age appropriate. Upon returning to school in August, students will complete an assignment based on the novel he/she read.

Falcon Cove has included some of our personal favorites as well as other noteworthy suggestions from Just Read, Florida! and the American Library Association.
