Success Stories

A new world

"Our experience at Sylvan was exceptional. Our son, grade 4, was quickly declining in the area of reading comprehension and it was becoming increasingly frustrational for him to read. The evaluation showed he was in a lower percentile than we had originally thought. We quickly enrolled in the program set forth. My son assured me that he would never enjoy reading. As time moved on we saw results and occasionally "caught" him picking up a book to read on his own. The start of 5th grade demanded an immense amount of reading, and he was up to the task. He read six Classics in the first several weeks of school! He was actually excited to read the books and tell me about what he was reading. I'm so thankful for the Sylvan program. I have a boy that actually thinks it's great to read! We couldn't be happier.....it has opened a new world!"

No more melt downs

"Sad, dejected, cheerless, stressful, pressured, and strain. These are all things we felt when it came time for our daughter, Christine, to do homework. We knew she had a hard time reading, and she was in a special reading class in school, but this just was not enough. After weeks of crying, seeing her glum, and dejecting homework, we knew, as parents, we had to do something to get our daughter help.
We turned to Sylvan. The first day we toured their facility and spoke to their staff we realized they knew what to do. She was extensively tested and they came up with a "Sylvan Success Plan." We knew any help was better than no help at all, so we went ahead and enrolled Christine.
She looked forward to going to Sylvan. She liked her tutor and the "Token" program they have. We were a little skeptical at first thinking the newness would wear off and then we would be right back to the stress of school work again. But to our surprise it did not.
We were delighted that when parent teacher conferences came around, Sylvan was right there with us discussing Christine's work. Sylvan staff kept in touch with her reading teachers to make sure everyone was on the same page and we were all doing what we could to help Christine.
She eventually started asking if she could quit public school and only attend Sylvan. She became more assured and proficient at reading. Homework became something she still did not want to do but the crying and "melt downs" soon stopped. As parents we breathed a sigh of relief, this was working.
After our first winter, Christine had done so well we gave her the summer off. To our surprise she spent all summer reading books. Every chance she got she would pick up a book to read. We did not care if that book was a level one or a level ten, we were just happy to see her read.
This winter she is once again enrolled in Sylvan. She has passed the Beginner Reader program and is now in their Academic Reading program. She loves the certificates she brings home and says they help her realize how far she has come.
Sylvan has helped her gain the confidence to read in a group and the assurance that when she does she will do it well. She can trust herself more now. As a parent we cannot stress how blessed and thankful we are for your program. We guarantee that as long as we live near a Sylvan Learning Center our daughter will be enrolled. We are satisfied that it is money well spent and you cannot spend too much on education, especially where your children are concerned."

A positive difference in a teen's life

"I wanted to let you know how impressed I am with the Sylvan program and how thankful I am that you can offer ASD credit for classes. Your program and staff have made a huge, positive difference in my son's life. After a disastrous start in Algebra I his Freshman year, we transferred him to Sylvan, where he completed Algebra I and Geometry. Now as a Sophomore, he is back in his high school Algebra II class, currently with an A grade. He scored 62 out of 64 on the Alaska math assessment test at the end of his Freshman year. Sylvan made ALL the difference in Ryan's life. Your staff is excellent and they want to see their students succeed. Ryan's life would be much different if this program had not been available to him; I truly believe he would HATE math and probably wouldn't have continued. Keep up the good work and Thank You."

Growing confidence

"My son arrived at Sylvan performing well below grade level in reading, writing and particularly math. Over the last 15 months he has attended Sylvan twice a week concentrating on raising his math grade which at that point was at grade 2. The lessons my son has received have provided a solid basis of basic math which was desperately needed. He has grown in confidence in all aspects of his schooling and is willing and ready to ask for help at school and Sylvan. He can take his homework to the tutors and have them help him and they are happy to go over math reviews prior to tests with him. Sylvan is happy to help my son and me in whatever aspects of math we ask for while at the same time moving through their own curriculum at a pace suitable to him. He has moved up 2-3 grade levels in his math. All in all Sylvan has provided us with top quality tutoring and top quality tutors."
