Success Stories

Sylvan "Write your way into college" essay contest winners

"I had a wonderful experience visiting Local 10 News. Laurie Jennings was a polite anchor woman and was very informative. She was extremely intelligent and enlightened me with her occupation. I appreciate that she took time to explain in detail how the newscast works. Her tour, knowledge, personality, and courtesy impressed me and made me appreciate her and her work more. She gave me an insight to her hectic life and taught me how the news works, which I may add is very intriguing. I enjoyed being “backstage” and watch the news that I watch daily on the television. I felt honored to have been chosen as a winner. The SAT prep class itself has been a fantastic experience. My teacher Danny has taught me several key test taking tricks that I am positive will help me out in the SAT. I would like to thank Sylvan for giving me this opportunity to enhance my knowledge.More>>>."

The Eagle's Food

"It was a very early, sunny morning in Central Park where Fufy the magnificent eagle lives. Fufy the eagle got hungrier and hungrier because all he ate yesterday were two clumsy ants. He looked all around. He saw nice colossal animals to eat but they were too big. He found a brainy owl and it was small enough but the owl was part of his family so he didn't want to eat it. Soon he said, "Polly want a cracker! Polly want a cracker!" This caught a creepy man's attention and he gave Fufy a cracker, but that was not enough. Fufy finally found a scrumptious baby potbelly pig. It was a perfect size and was not part of Fufy's family. "I'm glad I got that over with," said Fufy the Eagle as he finished the pig."

The Big City

"On Friday at noon, Mary and Matt found out that they're moving to the big city because Mom and Dad found a more inexpensive house and a better paying job. They exclaimed to their parents, "Oh, no! We don't want to move because we have many friends and happy, delightful memories here!" Their annoyed parents growled, "We are shocked! The Dad yelled, "You still have to pack your large luggage." After a few days traveling by car, Mary and Matt saw the city. They thought it was beautiful with all the bright lights and designs on the buildings. But they still didn't want to stay here. They went on the computer in their new house and they showed their parents the higher paying jobs, beautiful houses and a school with better education in the old city. Their parents were excited. Soon the family moved to a cheaper house in the old city and Dad found a high paying job. The family was elated!"

The Great Escape

"Once there was a huge knight named George who was guarding the enormous, filthy castle in England on a stormy afternoon. Suddenly, the ground started shaking and rumbling. George and the guards in the tower were frightened. "Help! Help! It's an earthquake," screamed the guards. The ground is opening up and the castle is breaking into pieces. The guards in the tower divided into the murky moat filled with alligators. "Grab the strong bumpy rope!,"yelled George. George tied one end to the guards. "Back up!" shouted George to the horse. The horse bolted backwards and pulled out the men. Then the three men went to the castle barn to get two horses. They galloped away to another country and escaped."

The Cuckoo Boys Adventure

"On a cloudy afternoon in Canada, Jeremy and Joshua were about to be late for a party. Instead of taking a car they decided to take a sailboat. It wasn't a good idea. Suddenly, as they were sailing, the weak, puny mast broke because the colossal wind was rocking the filthy sailboat back and forth. Immediately, Joshua bellowed, "This is going to be like the Titantic!" The mammoth waves and the daring wind were pushing the boat towards a large, gigantic island. Much later they crashed into the island. Jeremy yelled, "Look! Look! Look! There's the party on this island!" They went to the party and are so much food they couldn't move. After a while, their parents arrived in an elegan motorboat. The family went home and the boys never, ever went on a sailboat again because of what happened."

Reading

"My child could not read before he attended Sylvan Learning Center. After about 4 months, I noticed significant improvement in his reading skills. He feels very confident when he reads. He is really happy knowing that he can read and, as parents, so are we. Thanks a great deal to Sylvan Learning Center!"
