My son loves learning now"I am very pleased with how far my son has come being tutored by Sylvan Learning Center at Avondale. My son had chronic ear infections as an infant and toddler. The ear infections were so bad that his speech and listening skills were extremely behind. He had 48% hearing loss in each ear so after he had tubes put in and by the time he was ready for Kindergarten I was really nervous on how he would do. He was always on a scholarship warning as well as having an unsatisfactory letter grade across the board as well as "often off task" comments. His class work was horrible; you could tell that he didn't understand anything. He didn't want to go to school and was quite and kept to himself according to his teacher. I tried everything from flashcards to books and tapes to try and help him not fail Kindergarten, but unfortunately he did get held back in Kindergarten. - Samantha Powell |
We couldn't be prouder"I must admit that I was very skeptical at first of any tutoring service. But I have to say that Sylvan has been a positive influence in Kilian’s academic career. He never took interest in reading before Sylvan. Now, he wants to read books to his family and takes magazines in the car with him when we are going to the store. That in and of itself is a major accomplishment and his father and I couldn’t be prouder. His teacher is also seeing improvements. Kilian’s attitude towards school and homework has also changed in a more positive direction. I owe that to Sylvan." - Laura Lowry |
Appreciation"I appreciate Sylvan because they made me feel as if my child was just as important to them as he is to me. The communication with his teachers was so helpful. They stayed on him. The director always gave me her undivided attention. I am so thankful for the whole Sylvan staff." - Letitia, mother of Marcel, 8th grade |
Earned an A"Sylvan worked closely with our child's teacher and found out what would be taught every week and worked with our child on those skills. Our child worked hard in the 6 months he was with Sylvan and ended up earning an 'A' in Math for the year. Here are report card quotes from his math teacher for the past 2 trimesters: - Julia, mother of 5th grade son |
Confidence in her abilities"Tamerea was a bit apprehensive at the beginning. When I picked her up the very first day she said with great enthusiasm “I actually understand it now!” I was very pleased and thought “wow, if she thinks that now after only 2 hours just imagine how she will feel with more time”! She has enjoyed every session since and after every session she talks about what was worked on and how she understands it more and more. I can see her confidence towards her math abilities has grown even in the short amount to time we’ve had thus far. - Teri, mother of Tamerea, 7th grade |
Building a foundation"Sylvan enabled our daughter to improve her grades significantly in her honors class. Even though our daughter was attending a private school she was not able to get the needed information to perform well on her tests. Her homework grades were good but she was not making good grades on her test. Sylvan gave her the skill set to understand the foundations to the materials and the diagnostic ability to evaluate and perform on her tests. Our daughter connected well to the Sylvan instructors and was able to interact with them very well. She actually enjoyed going to the tutoring session. We ended with her making A’s on her tests and subsequent report cards. - Ann, mother of Sedona, 11th grade |
Honor Roll"Alex had the potential to be a great student, but she lacked the confidence. In the classroom, this translated into appearing unprepared. We tried classroom tutors, after school help sessions, and spending nearly four hours every evening on one subject area (Math). After school activities were non-existent and studying for other subjects, although important, was often pushed aside. This perceived weakness in one subject area negatively impacted nearly every other aspect of our daughter’s life. Literally the day we started with Sylvan, her confidence improved. She raised her hand in the classroom (and got the answer right!!!). Within a week, time spent on math homework dropped to 30 minutes per night, very reasonable. Within two months, she was on the honor roll. She had time to fit in extra-curricular activities and spend time with friends. Alex worked a few hours a week throughout the summer with Sylvan, and had a great time. That following school year, she moved to the advanced math class and hasn’t looked back. She’s continuing to earn “A’s” in math, is a confident student, and insists on coming to Sylvan every week. - Julie, mother of Alex 8th grade |
Positive progress"My son was on the edge of failing Geometry. Now with the help of Sylvan his homework grades and tests have gone from a D average to a B average. I am very pleased and proud of him with the progress that he has made." - Barabara, mother of TyQuan, 9th grade |
Achievement"Sylvan has really helped my child achieve and reach full potential with mathematics. The staff and teachers are very polite and professional at all times. My daughter was very comfortable with the teachers, which make it very easy for her to learn. My daughter Markia grade in math went from a D to an A. Markia is more confident and has a better understanding when solving problems now. - Michael, father of Markia, 11th grade |
Success"Sylvan has helped my child tremendously since his first help session. He was struggling in his Algebra II class. It was hard for us to help him due to our work schedule and the time elapsed since being in a math class. Since his enrollment in Sylvan his failing grade has improved 2 letter grades to a solid B+. His confidence has increased in his math abilities since starting with Sylvan. - Carol, mother of Keith, 10th grade |
Caring environment"Jacob has responded extremely well to the staff and caring environment at Sylvan. They make learning fun for him instead of making learning just feel like work. The reward system is fantastic. Jacob works harder even if it is just for a little rubber ball. He loves the feeling of accomplishment, knowing he earned his prize. - Missy, parent of Jake, 2nd grade |
