IEP Day 2012

Parents of children with special needs are invited to attend the 29th Annual Involved Exceptional Parents' Day Conference on March 17th, 2012. This full day event will include breakfast and lunch, keynote speakers, exhibits and a variety of workshops.

Tierrasanta Military Family Collaborative Forum

Military families are invited to participate in a forum on February 9th, 2012 to voice for positive change in the Tierrasanta Military Community. All attendees have a chance to win a raffle prize! Hosted by Californians for Drug Free Youth (CADFY) and with the San Diego Military Family Collaborative.

8th Annual Winter Wonderland Snow Day at Montgomery-Waller Community Park & Recreation Center

Sylvan Learning Bonita had the opportunity to attend the 8th Annual Winter Wonderland Snow Day at Montgomery-Waller Community Park & Recreation Center on Saturday, December 10, 2011. It was a fun-filled day with Santa & his elves, food vendors, arts & crafts, face painting, car exhibitions, an astro jump and a snow hill with real snow!

GUHSD's Got Plans? Career & College Fair at Cuyamaca College

Sylvan Bonita was proud to attend GUHSD'S Got Plans? Career and College Fair on Saturday, October 22nd at Cuyamaca College.

The Grossmont Union High School District presented Got Plans? Career and College Fair for all high school students and their parents. This included meeting admissions representatives from 70+ public and private universities, community colleges, vocational schools and the military. Parents and students also had the opportunity to attend two 45-minutes workshops for more information on what to do after high school.

SAY San Diego's Back to School Drive

Sylvan Bonita is proud to have been a part of SAY San Diego's Back to School Drive for the 2011-2012 school year! When all the donations were in and the school supplies were counted, SAY San Diego had collected almost 40% more supplies than last year. Thanks to generous financial donors as well, SAY San Diego was also able to help nearly 50 families purchase new shoes for the school year. Sylvan Bonita wants to send a BIG THANK YOU out to all of our families who supported SAY San Diego's Back to School Drive!

Southern California School Expo

The Inaugural Southern California School Expo was a Success! Sylvan Learning Center was there to be part of San Diego’s largest gathering of public and private schools, universities and education information was held August 13th and 14th at Westfield UTC. Families met face to face with representatives from pre-school to college and trade schools, MBA programs to student loans.

Military Resource: Courage to Call

Courage to Call is a new Prevention and Early Intervention program in San Diego County providing services to those who have served in the Military, Reserves or Guard, and their Families & Loved Ones.

Military Resource: Kids' Turn

Kids’ Turn is the only program in San Diego County working with the whole family to achieve a child-centered and healthy divorce. Their programs are known throughout the United States and have been in San Diego since 1996. Kids’ Turn is a low cost solution for families experiencing the pain of divorce or separation, no matter how great the conflict. While many families are court ordered, a growing number of families are taking the Kids’ Turn workshops because of the recommendation of an attorney, teacher, and counselor or because of their own desire to make this traumatic life change as healthy for their family as possible.

Military Resource: Free Parenting Workshops

The Positive Parenting Program provides free parenting workshops throughout San Diego County in Head Start preschools, elementary schools, and other community sites. Workshops are designed to help parents and professionals learn how to use simple, practical, and powerful strategies to strengthen families. Workshops consist of three 90-minute seminars and include topics such as resiliency, independence, respect and cooperation in children. The curriculum is based on Triple P America, a research-based program that has been shown to promote family harmony, reduce parent-child conflict, foster successful peer relationships, and prepare children for successful experiences at school. The Positive Parenting Program is non-denominational.

Military Resource: Warrior Traditions

Warrior Traditions: Iraq & Afghanistan Veterans
Active Duty/Reserve/Retired - Families/Significant others welcome!

The Warrior Traditions Program provides free, off-base, and confidential support groups for Active Duty, Reserve, National Guard, and Combat Veterans of Iraq (OIF) and Afghanistan (OEF) and their loved ones. Warrior Traditions groups are led by Combat Veterans and provide a safe place to share experiences, receive assistance, and discuss any issues related to Combat or its effects on readjustment to civilian life.

15th Annual Military Child Appreciation Festival

Sylvan Learning of Bonita, La Mesa & Imperial Beach attended the 15th Annual Military Child Appreciation Festival on Sunday, May 8th, 2011. This great event was presented in partnership with New York Life's - Military at Home Initiative. Activities at the festival included free food tastings from local restaurants, Big Animals for Little People, Fire Truck, Bounce House, Cupcake Walk, Face Painting, BBall Challenge, and 10 local community resource tables & vendors! A great time was had by all!

A Night To Remember

Sylvan Learning participated in "A Night to Remember" which was a prom for students with special needs ages 14 to 20 on Friday, May 6th from 6:00pm - 9:00pm. Through donations and volunteers, these honored guests were provided with dresses or tuxedos, make-up application, up-do for females, hair styling for males, jewelry, corsage/boutonniere, limo ride, a walk down the red carpet, a photo, a gift bag, appetizers/desserts and dancing! Each guest was partnered with a student from Eastlake Church. These students had a great time hosting our honored guests!

Sylvan Bonita participates in Princess Project Dress Donation Drive!

The Princess Project promotes self-confidence and individual beauty by providing free prom dresses and accessories to high school girls who cannot otherwise afford them. Donate your new or nearly new gowns or accessories! With your help, over 3,000 girls were served in dress giveaways in March of 2010 & 2011 throughout San Diego!  A special THANK YOU to all who donated a gown!
