At Sylvan Learning Center, we pride ourselves on the excellent staff we have to serve your students.
My name is Frances Lopez-Bautista, and I am the Center Director here at the Bonita and the Imperial Beach Sylvan Center.
I was born in southern San Diego, raised by a father who retired from the military and a mother who was once a teacher in the Philippines. I attended Finney Elementary School, and Montgomery Junior and High school. I earned my B.A. degree in Liberal Studies in June 2003 at the University of California, Riverside, and my credentials through San Diego State University.
I taught for the Chula Vista School District for 4 years since 2002 (as a first, second and fifth grade teacher). I have a strong Sylvan background and have been with Sylvan for more than 6 years. I began as a teacher, thereafter became the Director of Education and now the Center Director for both Bonita and Imperial Beach.
I love being a new mom to a baby girl named Jasmine born March 8, 2010. I also enjoy listening to music, playing guitar, singing, drinking Starbucks coffee, watching movies and spending time with my family and friends.
"Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself." ~John Dewey
I am from Florida and I am a Navy wife. I have taught in Florida, California, and Washington. I have been with Sylvan in Washington and in California since 2005. My undergraduate degree is in Music Education, however after graduation, I discovered that I loved teaching in a "regular" classroom as well. So I went back to school and received my Masters of Science in Education (Middle Level specialization). I enjoy music, gaming, and of course, kids. I love the opportunity that Sylvan gives us to reach students individually!
I have been with Sylvan as a math teacher since March of this year. I am also a substitute during the day, but being able to teach math one-on-one is more rewarding. I enjoy teaching math to students and being able to see the 'ah-ha' moment. I attended college at University of California at Santa Barbara and received my Bachelor of Science in Geophysics and my Bachelor of Arts in History. I grew up in the high desert most of my life before moving to Santa Barbara for college. My interests include animals (I have snakes, birds, and a dog and I absolutely love going to the zoo), science fiction, cross stitching, and baking.
My name is Paul Maglio. I have been teaching at Sylvan for 3 1/2 years. I have taught everything here from Beginning Reading to SAT prep and have enjoyed it all! I was born and raised in San Diego, CA. Aside from two years spent in South America and two in Lancaster, CA, I have spent my entire life here. I am a Special Education teacher by trade. I have taught everything from preschool through high school and currently work with "at risk" high school students through a great non-public school. I received my Professional Clear credential at Cal State Bakersfield and my Preliminary credential through San Diego State. I have a B.A. in Spanish with a minor in Religious Studies. I also have an associate’s degree in Business Administration through Mesa College. As any educator can tell you, teaching is a passion. I really like working in an environment where I can sit down in a small group (no more than three students) and interact with each on an individual level. Seeing a student move from one success to the next is what keeps me coming back.
Hello, my name is Michael Garcia, and I have just recently begun working at Sylvan which has been a great experience. I have especially enjoyed getting to know all the great teachers and kids. Currently, I attend San Diego State University, and I am pursuing a degree in Business. When not in school, or working, I enjoy drawing, painting, and listening to music.
I have been working at Sylvan for 3 years. I received my Bachelors degree from UCSD in Human Development and my Masters degree from National University in Cross Cultural Teaching. My hobbies include cooking, shopping, and planning events. I am a dedicated Navy wife of 7 years and a devoted mother of two (ages 6 and 1 1/2). I enjoy getting to know each student and helping them to achieve their full educational potential.
Hello! I have been a teacher at Sylvan for three years now, and I really enjoy working one-on-one with students and seeing them gain more confidence. I hold a bachelor's degree in Mathematics from UCSD. I am a Navy wife and San Diego native who enjoys hiking, movies, and playing the piano.
My name is John Meyers and I am a Math, Science, Reading, and Study Skills teacher at Sylvan. I have a Teaching Credential in Life Science and Geoscience from Cal State San Bernardino and a BA in History from UCSD. Along with teaching, I have also been a coach for tennis, football, track and basketball.
I came to Sylvan Learning Center with experience teaching general and special education, as a social worker, and as a Chaplain. I have a multiple subject credential, as well as a Masters in Divinity. I am currently seeking ordination in my denomination. I am a native San Diegan and enjoy reading, writing, and hiking. In the near future, I hope to take up kayaking with my husband! Using my Master of Divinity, I plan to seek ordination in the United Church of Christ.
Hello! My name is Daniel, and I'm happy to be a new addition to the Sylvan family! I am a San Diego native, and I graduated from Eastlake High School in 2005. I attended UCSD and graduated with a B.A. In Psychology. During my four years at UCSD, I worked as a writing tutor for the Office of Academic Support and Instructional Services (OASIS) and taught a writing class for their summer program, Summer Bridge (in which I also participated), which gives incoming freshmen a sneak peek at what college will be like. Although I already have a substitute teaching credential, I am currently in the credential program at SDSU to be a high school English teacher. In my spare time, I enjoy listening to my eclectic collection of music, watching movies (especially anything with action and comedy), playing video games on my Nintendo Wii and iPod Touch, and of course reading (particularly essays or short stories, like those of my favorite author David Sedaris).
I graduated from University of California, San Diego in 2009 with a B.A. in Applied Mathematics. I also hold a teaching credential. I grew up in Chula Vista and attended Chula Vista High School. I enjoy teaching and love solving problems. I am teaching at Sylvan because I am firm believer in the success of giving personalized instruction at the individual level. Some of my interests include playing soccer with my friends, cooking, and watching movies.
I grew up in Bonita, California and attended Bonita Vista High School. After High School I attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where I received my Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. After working as a hardware and software engineer for many years, I wanted to impart my passion for math and science to young learners. I have a single subject credential in Physics, Math and Chemistry and I substitute in the Sweetwater and Grossmont districts. When not spending time with my Maine Coon cats, I like software development, reading, tennis, golf, SCUBA, cycling and spending time with family.
I am a new member to the Sylvan family as a teacher's assistant. I obtained a Bachelor's degree in Fashion Marketing and Management in 2009 from The Art Institute of CA-San Diego. After 2 years, I have decided to go back to school to pursue the path of becoming a Veterinary Technician. I am also a bible study leader for my sister-in-law's church's children ministry. My passion is not only for animals, it is also helping the children strive to reach their goals.
Hi, my name is Bridget and I was born in Phoenix, Arizona, but grew up in Colorado and the San Francisco Bay Area. I attended and graduated from San Diego State University. I completed my Teaching Credential program at California State University Northridge and my student teaching in Los Angeles. I recently moved back to San Diego to pursue my goals as an educator. I love working with students of all ages. My hobbies include traveling, running, and going to the beach.
I was born in Manila, Philippines and moved here to San Diego shortly after. I grew up in Paradise Hills/National City before moving to Berkeley for college. After graduating with a degree in Integrative Biology, I moved back to San Diego where I began working as a Clinical Lab Technician. After a few years, I left to go back to school at SDSU where I am currently taking additional coursework to further my own education.
I am a San Diego native. I live in El Cajon and a mother of 2. I have taught elementary school for 2 years and love being around kids. I love eating good food, soaking up the sun and laughing with my friends and family.
I was born and raised in San Diego and reside in Lemon Grove. I attended Pt. Loma Nazarene and obtained a B.A. degree in Spanish Literature. I have been working for the Grossmont Union High School District and Helix High School for 3 years teaching Spanish and Writing. I have 2 children who are 11 years old and 7 years old. I enjoy hiking, snorkeling, strategical board games and reading on my spare time.
I love what I do here at Sylvan when the students come in and tell me how successful they are becoming in school.
I graduated from University of California, Riverside and earned my B.A. degree in Liberal Studies and Education. I earned my teaching credential from Cal State San Marcos and have started my masters degree in education. I have taught children in grades K-6. My experience is mostly working with elementary school students. I have been with Sylvan since 2005 with Bonita, La Mesa, Clairemont, and IB. In my free time I enjoy chocolate candy making, going to hot yoga, watching movies and making hair clips!
