Meet the Tutors
Our Sylvan trained and certified tutors are dedicated to your child’s success. Working together with you, we will:
- Pinpoint your child’s learning needs using the Sylvan Skills Assessment®
- Develop a personalized learning plan based on your child’s goals
- Offer unique insights about what will work for your child
- Teach each lesson the way your child learns best
- Build a relationship with your child to provide learning that’s fun, engaging and rewarding
Kathryn Byrne
Center Director
Kathryn has been with Sylvan since 2002. Prior to working at Sylvan, Kathryn taught high school English.
Outside of Sylvan, she loves spending time with friends, family and her two dogs, Buddy and Apollo. She also loves reading, sewing, biking and playing tennis.
To find great books for kids of all ages, Kathryn recommends checking out BookAdventure.com and ReadKiddoRead.com. For grades 9 and up, Kathryn highly recommends "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak. For wonderfully illustrated children's books, Kathryn recommends anything by author/illustrator Bill Peet.
Chris Stinson
Director of Education
A former 5th grade teacher, Chris has a lot of experience with education. He has been our Director of Education since the Fall of 2011, and oversees the progress of all of our students. An ECU alum, Chris is a fan of all things pirate!
Sheryl Howell
Assistant Director
Sheryl has been with Sylvan since January 2008. Starting off as a TA, she worked her way up to administrative duties and has been assistant director for over 2 years now.
Sheryl loves to read and run in her spare time. She recently completed her first half-marathon this past fall!
Cindy Presnell
Admissions Director
We are so excited to welcome Cindy to our Sylvan family in Cary. She has been with Sylvan Centers in the Raleigh area since 2004.
Outside of Sylvan, Cindy loves spending time with her family, her friends and her pets.
One of Cindy's favorite books for young readers is the classic Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss!

Ms. Jennifer
Admissions Director
Ms. Jennifer has been a member of our Sylvan family since 2002. She has been a director at both the Garner and Cary locations. Outside of Sylvan, Jennifer enjoys spending time with her friends and family. Keeping up with her twins keeps her busier than we ever could!

Ms. Carol

Ms. Carol has been a valuable asset to the Sylvan team since she first started in 2002. She loves teaching math and SAT, but is skilled in teaching almost every subject Sylvan has to offer!
Ms. Anna

Ms. Anna is a Sylvan pro, having worked with us since 2002! She is very versatile, doing everything from teaching to testing.

Ms. Margo has brought her expertise to Sylvan for 7 years now and is a pro at dealing with all types of students. She is always willing to go the extra mile to make sure her students have the tools to succeed!

Ms. Debbi has been with us now for five years and is amazing with our younger students teaching beginning reading!

Ms. Liz has been with Sylvan for years now. Starting out as a Teacher Assistant, she moved up to teaching and even testing!
Ms. Katy

Ms. Katy became a critical part of our Sylvan team in 2009. Her strong communication skills and ability to connect with students have made her a very valuable asset!
Abby Pergerson
Instructor
Abby has been a wonderful addition to our teaching team since 2011. Her experience at a Sylvan in Nebraska has made her quite the asset - she can teach every subject and even helps us out with testing, updating and PQR's!
Caroline Borer

Ms. Caroline's cheerful smile and positive attitude help all of her students to enjoy coming to Sylvan. She works a lot with our beginner readers, but can teach almost every subject.
Kariman Allam

A former principal, Kariman brings a lot of educational experience to our staff. Her expertise is math and science, and she occasional works with reading students as well.
Ben Bing

A recent addition to our family, Mr. Ben has quickly become a favorite of our students. His playful nature makes learning fun!
Brett Gordon

A writing expert, Brett has been working wonders with our Sylvan writing students. In addition, she can teach reading and math and is currently learning our Study Skills program!
Michelle Schimmelpenningh

A newer addition to our Sylvan family, Ms. Michelle is great at working with our younger students - particularly in reading, math and writing!
Kelli Fuhrmann
Instructor
A special needs teacher, Ms. Kelli's patience and gentle manner make her a fantastic instructor. She mostly works with our young readers.
Nicole Weil

Ms. Nicole has been just the fresh face our reading students needed! She is great with the beginner readers as well, and will soon be teaching math students.
Nicole Cassidy
Instructor
As one of our newest teachers, Nicole has proven herself to be a great educator. She is awesome with the upper level math students, and works with reading and writing as well.
