Our Sylvan trained and certified tutors are dedicated to your child’s success. Working together with you, we will:
Marcy began working for Sylvan in February, 2006, bringing with her 6 years experience in supplemental education. As well as working in other learning center environments, Marcy also taught literacy to under-privileged youth, and worked with adults, teaching English as a second language. Marcy holds a bachelors degree in psychology from Fairfield University and is considering pursuing a masters in educational psychology.
Susan has her B.S. in English/Biology -Education from Central Connecticut State University. Susan has taught high school and middle school English and has experience in both public and private school environments. She has also taught third grade, has tutored private students, and is a trained parent assistor in special education. Susan has been with Sylvan Learning Center for over ten years and has held positions as Tutor, Lead Teacher, Program Manager, and Director of Education. Sue and her husband have three adult children. Reading and gardening are her favorite activities and the excitement of leaning keeps her involved with educating children.
Melissa has a B.S. in Elementary Education and Social Studies from Western Connecticut State University. She has experience teaching 1st grade in a public school setting. Melissa tutored at Sylvan Learning Center for a year before being promoted to Assistant Director of Education in November 2007. Melissa is an avid sports fan-loves the New York Mets!- Cheers on the UCONN basketball teams!- Knows the New England Patriots are the best! Melissa enjoys reading and watching movies. Math is her favorite subject to teach.
Jenn has been working for Sylvan since 2006. Jenn is a Connecticut certified K-12 Special Education teacher. She is Sylvan certified in the following programs: Beginning Reading, Academic Reading, Advanced Reading, Math Essentials, and Study Skills.
Sharon has 35 years teaching experience. She has a B.S. in Education and a Masters in Special Education. Sharon is Sylvan certified in Sylvan Beginning Reading and Sylvan Academic Reading. She has been working for Sylvan for 3 years. Sharon enjoys all her students and gives extra TLC to those who need it.
Rachel has been working at Sylvan for about three years. She teaches Sylvan Beginning Reading, Academic Reading, Math Essentials and Study Skills. During the day Rachel teaches and works with students with autism in New Haven.
Hank is a retired Systems Analyst. He is Sylvan certified in all the mathematics programs we offer and has as much fun teaching an elementary school student as working with a high school or college student. Hank has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Western Connecticut State University and is Sylvan certified in: Math Essentials, Sylvan Advanced Math, SAT Math, AceIt! Math program and has successfully completed the Math Content Proficiency Test for Directors of Education. Hank has been working for Sylvan for over three years.
Rita has a B.S. from Central Connecticut State University in Early Childhood Education and a Masters from the University of Bridgeport in Elementary Education. Rita loves teaching the little ones. As a new homeowner, she is looking forward to the spring so that she can plant flowers. Rita loves cats and has two-"Oreo" and "Cookie". Rita is Sylvan Certified in Sylvan Beginning Reading, Academic Reading, and Math Essentials. She finds Sylvan to be very rewarding, very challenging and lots of fun! She has been with Sylvan for 2 years.
Georgette is Connecticut certified in Mathematics for grades 7-12 and is Sylvan certified in Math Essentials and Advanced Math. When not at Sylvan she is the Director of Youth Ministries at Saugatuck Congregational Church is Westport and is the Business Development Manager for the Manufacturing Alliance of Connecticut in Waterbury. Georgette was born and raised in San Francisco and is an enthusiastic fan of the San Francisco Giants baseball team. She likes music, the Food Network, Animal Planet, The Amazing Race, and Hawaii Five-O. Georgette enjoys helping others learn and grow. She has worked at Sylvan for 1 year.
Laura has a B.S. in Elementary Education with a concentration in Mathematics. She graduated from Central Connecticut State University in 2006. She has been teaching at Sylvan since April 2010 and is Sylvan certified in Beginning Reading and Math Essentials.
Rose has a Masters degree in Education, with over 20 years of teaching experience. She is Sylvan certified to teach Beginning Reading, Academic Reading and Math Essentials. She has worked at Sylvan for 2 years.
Teaching is a career change for Jim who has worked as a Toolmaker and Designer for 25 years. He is a Connecticut certified Math teacher and has been with Sylvan for almost 2 years. He is Sylvan certified in Math Essentials and Advanced Math.
Kristin has been working at the Sylvan Learning Center since February 2010. She is Sylvan certified in the Academic Reading program, the Academic Writing program, the Study Skills program and the SAT Verbal program. Kristin graduated with a B.S.Ed from Central Connecticut State University in 2009 and is currently a high school English teacher.
Tainisha has a B.S. in Education k-6. She has been teaching second grade for 3 years. Tainisha has been working at Sylvan for 1 year and teaches Academic Reading and Math Essentials.
Nancy is currently a certified secondary History teacher teaching 7-8th grade in an urban district. She also holds a Masters degree in Literacy and Learning in the Content areas. Nancy is Sylvan certified in Academic Reading and has been teaching at Sylvan for the past year.
Kathy has a MA in Social Work and she has a State of Connecticut certification in secondary Social Studies. She is Sylvan certified in Academic Reading and Math Essentials. Kathy is starting her third year of teaching at Sylvan.
Mike's day job is at North End Middle School in Waterbury, Connecticut. He is one of the school's Literacy teachers. At Sylvan, Mike teaches the Academic Writing, Academic Reading, and Study Skills programs. This is Mike's third year teaching at Sylvan. Mike's nickname is "Inspector Gadget." If there is technology, you will find him.
Jen has a B.S. and is state certified in Early Childhood Education and Elementary 1-3/Liberal Studies. She is Sylvan certified in Beginning Reading, Academic Reading, Math Essentials, and Advanced Math.
Mary Ann is a retired educator and has enjoyed returning to teaching. She is Sylvan certified in Beginning Reading, Academic Reading, and Math Essentials. Mary Ann has many years experience in education as a Special Education teacher, Supervisor of Special Education, and Primary School Principal. She has been with Sylvan for 1 year.
