Success Stories

Shhh...I'm doing my Sylvan - Reading Success Story

"I want to tell you about Matthew, a young man I met this summer when he was a rising 6th grader. Matthew came to our center with a history of poor grades (making 60's and 70's in spelling and language arts) and low reading comprehension. According to his mother, he was only borderline passing every year, and the reason he was promoted each year was because of his size. Homework was very difficult because he didn't "get it." Matthew also had a bad attitude.
We tested Matthew and found that he was reading at a 2nd grade level. Matthew enrolled in Academic Reading in June, and he averaged 10 hours a week of class. Once school started, Matthew's schedule became tight, so he moved to Sylvan online.
By August, Matthew's reading was 5.2. He he had grown almost 3 grade levels in just 2 months!
Today, Matthew's mother stopped by to give me some exciting news. On his report card Matthew had 2 A's and 5 B's! She said he is very happy with himself, and his whole attitude has changed for the better. She also mentioned that sometimes she gets home after 6:00 (which is when Matthew has his SOAR class), and he'll say to her, "Shhh... I'm doing my Sylvan!"
I thought you'd like to know about Matthew, because we are SO proud of him."

Beginning Reading Success Story

"Zachary's parents contacted us in March of his Kindergarten year. Zachary had struggled throughout the whole year and still didn't know his alphabet when we first began working with him in the Sylvan Beginning Reading program. Homework was impossible. Zachary's parents were very concerned because his classroom teacher was already recommending that Zachary be retained in Kindergarten. Zachary is the size of an average 3rd grader and his parents were worried that he would have social problems if he was held back.

Zachary attended Sylvan between 2 and 4 hours a week. Many of his skills had to be reviewed until Zachary truly mastered the skill.
A couple of weeks ago, after only 6 months, Zachary completed his Sylvan Beginning Reading Program. He is now ahead of the rest of the first graders in his class and he did not have to repeat Kindergarten. On his last day at Sylvan, we all marvelled at the young man who sat in our center, quickly and correctly answering every question we asked. Zachary no longer struggles with his alphabet. He knows all of his letter sounds and digraphs. He is reading above a first grade level. He knows the difference between a statement and a question without hesitation. He can also describe the setting, characters, and plot of a story!
His dedicated parents are amazed by his progress. They tell everyone everywhere that Sylvan saved their child! When others are shocked by how much they spent on Zachary's reading program, his parents respond by saying it was worth every penny and that it was the smartest thing they've ever done."

Algebra

"I just wanted to thank you for the wonderful job that you and your staff did with my daughter. Kara finished the year with a 98 average in algebra at the Hazlet Middle School. The enrichment and test taking skills that she studied at Sylvan helped her with gaining acceptance into Communications High School for the fall. Kara will be placed in geometry her freshman year due to the high test score she received on her entrance exam.
I will happily recommend your center to anyone who asks. Kara will be back for SAT prep in the future."

tried private tutors, only Sylvan worked

"To Whom it may Concern,
We are just writing to say how happy we are with Sylvan. Our son Nicky was having problems reading. We tried private tutoring, and we did not see much help. My cousin had sent her daughter to Sylvan, so that is why we decided to send Nicky.
We started at Sylvan a year and a half ago. We met Melissa Dorsa and she has been with us ever since. I am truly thankful for her. She tested our Nicky and it turned out that he was only at a kindergarten level and he was about to start 3rd grade. With all the help from all the great teachers at Sylvan he is now finishing up 3rd grade while he is currently in 4th grade. There is still a lot of work to be done, but we have already accomplished so much.
The thing I like the most about Sylvan is how every six weeks Melissa sits us down and goes over everything Nicky has done. And every six months he gets re-tested to see what level he is at. It is nice that Melissa keeps us so well up to date.
We are so grateful for Sylvan and all the teachers and Melissa for helping our Nicky. Thank You."
