Andrew's Success
"At the age of five, Andrew had expressive language delay. He was frustrated by his difficulty expressing himself. Andrew was recommended speech (2x a week). In first and second grades, Andrew needed more help in the areas of reading and writing. Andrew was given reading recovery. He needed individual instruction in phonics in order to improve his performance in reading.
For three years (from second thru fourth grades), Andrew attended Project Read for two days after school and outside of school, Andrew participated at the Family Centered Tutorial Project at Starret City for also two days. When Andrew got to the third grade, he was doing well in all areas of his academics with the exception of his reading comprehension and decoding skills. Andrew was recommended for reading resource to develop phonetic analysis and decoding skills. Andrew received reading resource (5x a week) for third, fourth, and fifth grade.
In fifth grade, Andrew strived to improve his reading skills. In reading and writing, Andrew went from approaching the grade level standards to meeting them. Last summer before Andrew started Junior High School, I had Andrew attend the Sylvan Learning Center so he could get ahead in his reading skills. I didn’t want Andrew to forget everything he had gained in his reading. The new school was going to be a challenge for him. Most of the children were functioning on a higher level then Andrew (they were in a gifted program).
Thanks to Sylvan Learning Center, Andrew was able to move up one grade level in reading. He has mastered many skills in reading especially improved his fluency and comprehension levels, he has a positive attitude towards reading, and he enjoys engaging his time in reading. Andrew was able to keep up with his school work and he got promoted to the next grade with a 91.5 average.
In reading, Andrew is meeting the grade level standards and is well on his way to surpassing them."
