Cathlene Schwartzbeck

Director

Since 2002 Cat has excelled as teacher, Educational Specialist, Director of Education, Regional Education Coordinator, and Center Director. Cat graduated from SUNY Plattsburgh with a BA in both Elementary Ed and English with additional training in Special Education, and she recently received her MBA from SUNY Albany. She is responsible for overseeing each student’s academic progress at Sylvan and she communicates regularly with parents and with schools to ensure consistency of learning and success within our programs. Her favorite moments at Sylvan include seeing the look in a child's eyes when they understand a new concept and hearing from parents that their child picked up a book on their own for the first time.

Teacher, Albany tutoring

Tiffany Salisbury

Teacher

One of our lead teachers, Tiffany has been with the Sylvan team since 2003. Tiffany received her Masters Degree at St. Rose and is a teacher at St. Helens in Niskayuna. Her favorite part of her job here at Sylvan is the opportunity to work with a diverse group of students of all ages and abilities. She is a requested teacher who keeps her students laughing and learning throughout their time here at Sylvan.

Teacher, Albany tutoring

Lester Betor

Teacher

Lester first came to Sylvan as a parent, and we are now excited to have him as part of our teaching team. Lester began teaching as a second career, and is currently a 5th grade teacher in the Capital District. It only made sense to him to join the Sylvan team when he was looking for a part-time job. “It is obvious that the Sylvan environment encourages students while building skills – I wanted to be part of that. I make sure I know each child’s name and what their back-story is. It’s all about building personal connections and relationships. I love Sylvan and I want them to love their time here as well."

Teacher, Albany tutoring

Harriet McGowan

Harriet has been with Sylvan since 2002, and she has over 30 years of teaching experience. Her teaching certification is in Secondary Education – English and Social Studies. Since working at Sylvan, Harriet has taught many of our high school students, but she has also become one of our most requested Beginning Reading teachers. She enjoys having a chance to work with the young learners, and they love working with her as well!
