Our Sylvan trained and certified tutors are dedicated to your child’s success. Working together with you, we will:
Kim is a graduate of St. Francis College with a BS in Elementary Education and a minor in Spanish. In 2005, Kim received a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from St. Francis University. Kim taught for three years locally. She has been with Sylvan since the center opened in January 2001. She previously served as an instructor and then one year as the Director of Education. As the Center Director, Kim is responsible for all duties related to managing the center.
Jennifer has been with Sylvan of Hollidaysburg since September of 2003. She is a graduate of the California University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. Jennifer completed her student teaching experience in both a fourth grade in Belle Vernon, PA and a kindergarten in Fredericktown, PA. Jennifer is a Presidential Scholar and a member of Kappa Delta Pi, an honor society for education. As the Director of Education, Jennifer is responsible for administering the Sylvan Program to ensure academic growth for all enrolled students.
Shirley has been with Sylvan of Hollidaysburg since 2000. She is a graduate of St. Francis College with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics/ Education. She gained over twenty-five years of teaching experience at St. Patrick School / St. Demetrius School in Gallitzin, PA. Shirley currently teaches at Holy Name School in Ebensburg, PA. At Sylvan, Shirley specializes in tutoring math, upper level math, and SAT Prep instruction.
Tammie has worked at Sylvan of Hollidaysburg since February 2005. She is a graduate of Indiana University with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and mid-level mathematics. She has been involved with many community activities to help further her professional developement. These activities include Earthkeepers, Project Wild, Project Learning Tree, Balanced Literacy, and a Lifeskills training program. At Sylvan, Tammie enjoys tutoring reading, math, algebra, study skills, and writing.
Elizabeth has been with Sylvan of Hollidaysburg since July of 2008. She is a magna cum laude graduate of the Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science in English Education. She completed her student teaching experience at Cambria Heights High School in Patton, PA, where she designed and implemented lessons for the 9th grade general and enriched English classrooms. At Sylvan, she specializes in tutoring reading and upper level reading, writing, study skills, and SAT Prep instruction.
Brianne has been with Sylvan of Hollidaysburg since August of 2008. She is a graduate of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Secondary Education – English. She completed her student teaching at Wilson Middle School and Strong Vincent High School, both in Erie, PA. While at Edinboro, she volunteered at the University’s writing center, helping students with a range of writing issues, including ESL students, students with disabilities, and those in need of just a little assistance. Following graduation, Brianne taught grade 9 English and Creative Writing at Midwood High School in Charlotte, North Carolina. She was named Midwood's First Teacher of the Year in the Spring of 2008. After coming back to the area, Brianne worked at the Hope for Hyndman Charter School as a high school English teacher. At Sylvan, Brianne loves tutoring reading, upper level reading, writing, study skills, and SAT Prep instruction.
Kristy has been with Sylvan of Hollidaysburg since April of 2009. She graduated from the California University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. She completed her student teaching experience in a second and fourth grade class in West Jefferson Hills, PA. She substituted for several school districts for two years before teaching at St. Joan of Arc School in South Park, PA. Kristy also taught for a year at the Sylvan Learning Center in West Mifflin, PA. After moving to the area, Kristy began teaching fourth through sixth grades at St. Michael’s School in Loretto, PA. At the school, she serves as the Director of the Diversity Organization and the Assistant Director of the Forensics Program. At Sylvan, Kristy loves to tutor reading, math, writing, and study skills.
Alyshia has been with Sylvan of Hollidaysburg since July of 2012. She is a graduate of Saint Francis University with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Secondary Education. She completed her student teaching at the Cambria Heights School District in Patton, PA. Currently, Alyshia works as a math teacher in the Portage Area School District. At Sylvan, she specializes in tutoring math, upper level math, and SAT Prep instruction.
Virginia Christy, Instructor, has worked at Sylvan of Hollidaysburg since January of 2014. She is a graduate of Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary and Early Childhood Education. She completed her student teaching experience at Lawrence County Head Start in New Castle, PA and at West Side Elementary in New Castle, PA. She also completed a student teaching experience at the Presentation School in Dublin, Ireland. Virginia has worked for two year as a Pre-K Counts Preschool Teacher at Begin With Us Childcare and Preschool in Altoona. Virginia currently works with Family Behavioral Resources as a member of the Therapeutic Support Staff. At Sylvan, Christy enjoys tutoring reading, math, writing, and study skills.
Elizabeth Martinsen, Instructor, is a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Science in Childhood and Early Adolescent Education. She joined Sylvan of Hollidaysburg in 2014. She completed her pre-student teaching experience with a sixth grade class in Jonkoping, Sweden. She also completed her student teaching with a first grade class at Clearfield Elementary school in Clearfield, Pennsylvania. Elizabeth has worked T.E.S.L.A. in State College, teaching a Science Leadership Academy, and she has served as a counselor at the Outdoor School at Shavers Creek. While in State College, Elizabeth worked as a Penn State Kids College counselor. Additionally, she has experience working in the Discovery Space Science Center in State College, and the St. Paul’s Christian Preschool in State College. Elizabeth loves to tutor reading, math, writing, and study skills!
