Sarah Mock is a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania and earned her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. She completed her student teaching experience in Pittsburgh in conjunction with a professional development school. She worked as a 1st grade afterschool program tutor for Pittsburgh Public Schools and also worked at a Sylvan Learning Center in Pittsburgh. Sarah has gained Sylvan experience at three different Pennsylvania centers before joining the York - Sylvan Learning Center team.
Sarah believes that every person, young or old, should be a lifelong learner. She also believes that students should dream big and know that with hard work anything is possible!
Matt Wheeler has been a Director of Education for Sylvan Learning Center in York since 2007 and has worked for other Sylvans in VA, NC, and PA. He is a graduate of Liberty University with a BS in Social Sciences and holds a PA teaching certification. Matt has taught middle- and high-school Social Studies in VA and DE, as well.He works with students of all ages, from age 4 through adults. He also manages the Prometric Testing Center on our site. He enjoys helping build students' confidence and seeing them make progress through our Sylvan programs.
Doris holds a BA in Elementary Edudcation from Mt. St. Agnes College (Loyola) and a MEd (minor in Teaching Mathematics) from Johns Hopkins University. She has 20 years of experince teaching middle school Mathematics and Reading at schools in Maryland and California. Additionally, Doris was an Adjunct Faculty Member of Math Dept. at York College. She feels that the best things about Sylvan are the students and the feeling of accomplishment.
Sami comes from a very diverse background and has been exposed to a variety of cultures and experiences. He was born and bred in Ghana and studied in England and the United States. Sami graduated from Columbia University and Knox College with B.S in Electrical Engineering and B.A in Physics. He particularly likes that Sylvan's approach in helping students is unique, because it is tailored to ensure their success. He feels that it has a very resourceful environment for the effective impartation of knowledge and skills.
Tom went to college at Saint Francis University of PA and majored in Elementary Education and Special Education. He also obtained his Master's Degree at Shippensburg in Behavioral Disorders. Tom has nine years of teaching experience, working at Bedford Middle School as a Special Education teacher and as a 6th grade Social Studies teacher. Currently, he is teaching at the Meadows Partial Hospitalization Program in York, PA. His favorite thing about Sylvan is that the kids get the individualized instruction that is so beneficial to them.
Laura completed one year of undergraduate coursework at Oberlin College, then finished her Bachelor's degrees (B.A.- English and B.A.- Geography) at Penn State University's main campus. She has worked as an Environmental Educator for multiple years, in locations as far away as Maine and as close as York's County Parks. Laura has also served as a writing and literacy tutor, a hotline counselor, a newspaper reporter, and a contributor to National Geographic Magazine and National Geographic blogs-- a form of teaching "at a remove." Her favorite thing about Sylvan thus far is twofold: the personable staff, and the organizational mission, which seeks to address students as people. Students not only because they learn, but because they feel humanized in the process, addressing students as whole, empowered individuals.
JoAnn has a B.S. in Education from Millersville University and a Master's of Science in Library Science from Clarion University. She was Director of Kaltreider-Benfer Library in Red Lion and Village Library in Jacobus before retirement. JoAnn enjoys the attention to detail that proctoring tests for our Prometric Testing Center demands and likes meeting the testers and calming their anxiety.
Andrew went to York College and has a degree in Elementary Education. He loves sports and enjoys playing soccer. Andrew loves working with kids and at Sylvan, he likes that he can help them learn and grow in a fun and friendly atmosphere.
Lizzy earned her Bachelor's degree at Messiah College, and also her Master's of Education degree at Arcadia University. She taught Family & Consumer Science at New Oxford High School in 2010 and she currently substitute teaches K-12 at several York County school districts. Her teaching certifications are in Math, Art & Family & Consumer Science. She loves getting to know her students while teaching Math at Sylvan.
Joy attended Lincoln University and earned a Bachelors Of Science degree in Elementary Ed. and a Masters degree in Elementary Ed from Temple. She has experience teaching K, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades grades, much of that experience being with York City School District. Joy is currently teaching 3 and 4 year olds in a preschool classroom. She has always had a love for children and working with them one-on-one. Her favorite thing about Sylvan is that she get to work with children in small groups, because she believes children learn best in that type of setting and have greater success academically. She says,

Jeanenne holds a Bachelor's of Science in Elementary Education from York College of Pennsylvania. She has been with Sylvan since 2000. Jeanenne has 11 years experience working as a TSS with special needs children. Also, she tutors children who have dyslexia 1 to 1. She enjoys Sylvan because the goals and lessons are based on each student's individual needs.
Melissa graduated from Shippensburg University with a BS in Elementary Education and a minor in Early Childhood, while on a volleyball scholarship. She is experienced in all ages ranging from birth to high school. Currently she is teaching middle school alternative education students at Freedom Academy and coaching girls volleyball at both West York High School and Middle School. At Sylvan, Melissa enjoys working with the students one-on-one and seeing them succeed.
Erica is a graduate of Penn State University with a BA in Administration of Justice. Additionally, she received a Master's in Education from Holy Family University. Erica has worked in education for the past seven years with students from K-12. Erica loves the positive educational environment at Sylvan in addition to the 3:1 student to teacher ratio which allows her to focus on the individual needs of each student.
Linda has a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary and Special Education from Lock Haven University and a Master's Degree in Special Education from Shippensburg University. She recently retired from teaching and was an Instructional Support Teacher as well as a special education teacher. She enjoys helping the students succeed and to feel more confident in their abilities.
Amanda is a graduate of Immaculata University and holds a BA in Mathematics. While in college she greatly enjoyed her job as a tutor in the Math Center, which is the reason she decided to continue tutoring with Sylvan. Currently, Amanda is working in the business of real estate appraisal. At Sylvan, she loves getting to know the students and seeing them enjoying learning.
