An Ode to Study Skills, by a Notre Dame High School student
"Gather round, children, and you will be told of a test taker and his goal of old.
The school was clean, the halls were big but I’m afraid the food wasn’t fit for a pig. All was orderly; all was right, except for a child who wasn’t so bright. The reason for this was simple, he thought, “I’m a bad test taker, I can’t remember what was taught.” His friends disloyal, his parents and teachers distraught; “Why, oh why, can’t I remember what was taught?” Many methods were tried to bring up his grade but all had failed; his future did fade.
Then he tried something that wasn’t done before; he went to Sylvan to try to learn more. The people were friendly; they taught him a lot. And then the child came up with a plot. “Study, study, study, I will to become smart and not fail and end up like Bart.”
Long hours were spent up in his room Writing, studying, and feeling less gloom. Infused with knowledge about facts and stuff He saw himself years from now…Wow, he’s buff.
He dreamed of essays, tests and quizzes. Some days his brain got the fizzes. The tutors kept teaching and teachers did lecture And soon this kid knew more than Dexter.
His life of torment and of tests looked quite nice now…he was prepared for those pests! He swung the door open and fixed his tie, And all jaws dropped as he advanced by.
The sign on the door said TEST TODAY and the child thought to himself, “Me fail? No way.” He approached the test with confidence and skill and this time he didn’t cheat off of Bill. Days seemed like eons and it took many of them to give the test back, especially to him. His eyes widened and his heart pumped away. “Oh dear me – I got an A!”
He skipped down the halls, screaming in joy, for now his parents might buy him a toy. He ran up the sidewalk and flew through the door; his family suddenly awoke from their bore. His face was teeming with joy as he slammed the door. He showed them his test; they said, “We can’t ask for more!”
And so children, as you were, but remember The story of the child who started as a disaster But became the test-taking master."
