Success Stories

A classroom teacher's point of view

"I have seen such great improvement with Alex academically. I truly believe the extra support from Sylvan is paying off. Great job, Alex!"

- - A Pohatcong Township School teacher, Phillipsburg NJ

'I hug Richard all the time now and tell him how proud I am of him.'

"My son had some hard times in elementary school; he lost his father in 2nd grade, and was obviously distracted at that time. He fell further and further behind, and I knew he had a problem. I brought him to Sylvan in 6th grade, and he is a new child. I'm so glad I did this before he reached high school, but I'm sad that he had to suffer as long as he did. Now he knows he has the skills to do anything he puts his mind to. I'm so proud of him!"

- Proud Sylvan mom from Phillipsburg, NJ

'...this message is long, long overdue.'

"Sean's final Grade 4 report card this past June exemplifies the incredible value of the Sylvan Learning Centre program. Sean struggled so much during Grades 2 and 3 that he was brought to tears when he had to read. His inability to read brought down his self-esteem and it affected all his other subjects. Perhaps the school's lack of interest in really helping Sean realize his true inner potential was a blessing in disguise. In adversity, there is hope, and when there is hope, there is determination...and as Sean's parents, we were determined. Barb and I are so thankful that we found Sylvan. Sylvan helped Sean to find and recognize his potential, gave him the tools he needed to learn this most important skill of reading, and then gave him the ongoing encouragement and focus to bring him to where he is today. Sure the work and the process isn't over, but without the commitment to Sean that the two of you and your incredible staff gave to him he may have been lost in a system where average is acceptable, like so many 'would be' exceptional kids that are not being helped...I always tell people how pleased we are with the program and want to thank you both for making such a positive difference in both Sean's life and Matt's development in taking the Study Skills Program."

An Ode to Study Skills, by a Notre Dame High School student

"Gather round, children, and you will be told
of a test taker and his goal of old.

The school was clean, the halls were big
but I’m afraid the food wasn’t fit for a pig.
All was orderly; all was right,
except for a child who wasn’t so bright.
The reason for this was simple, he thought,
“I’m a bad test taker, I can’t remember what was taught.”
His friends disloyal, his parents and teachers distraught;
“Why, oh why, can’t I remember what was taught?”
Many methods were tried to bring up his grade
but all had failed; his future did fade.

Then he tried something that wasn’t done before;
he went to Sylvan to try to learn more.
The people were friendly; they taught him a lot.
And then the child came up with a plot.
“Study, study, study, I will to become smart
and not fail and end up like Bart.”

Long hours were spent up in his room
Writing, studying, and feeling less gloom.
Infused with knowledge about facts and stuff
He saw himself years from now…Wow, he’s buff.

He dreamed of essays, tests and quizzes.
Some days his brain got the fizzes.
The tutors kept teaching and teachers did lecture
And soon this kid knew more than Dexter.

His life of torment and of tests
looked quite nice now…he was prepared for those pests!
He swung the door open and fixed his tie,
And all jaws dropped as he advanced by.

The sign on the door said TEST TODAY
and the child thought to himself, “Me fail? No way.”
He approached the test with confidence and skill
and this time he didn’t cheat off of Bill.
Days seemed like eons and it took many of them
to give the test back, especially to him.
His eyes widened and his heart pumped away.
“Oh dear me – I got an A!”

He skipped down the halls, screaming in joy,
for now his parents might buy him a toy.
He ran up the sidewalk and flew through the door;
his family suddenly awoke from their bore.
His face was teeming with joy as he slammed the door.
He showed them his test; they said, “We can’t ask for more!”

And so children, as you were, but remember
The story of the child who started as a disaster
But became the test-taking master."
