Our Sylvan trained and certified tutors are dedicated to your child’s success. Working together with you, we will:
Jessica has worked for Sylvan Learning Centers since October 2006. She has been a Director of Education for the centers in Eldersburg and Owings Mills before becoming the Executive Director in Westminster. She received her B.A. in Physical Education from Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina. Jessica has taught students in kindergarten through high school in Physical Education and Health. She has coached high school and middle school teams in basketball, swimming, tennis, soccer, softball and dance. When asked what she enjoys most about working at Sylvan, Jessica stated, "I have seen tremendous accomplishments happen with Sylvan Students. To see a child walk in, grinning from ear to ear, with a great report card, test score, or daily assignment is why I LOVE going to work every day."
Amy joins our staff with a masters in Elementary Education from Towson University and a B.A. in Journalism and Broadcast News from the University of Maryland College Park. Amy taught for three years at Piney Ridge Elementary School and was a nominee for the Outstanding Teacher of the Year award in 2005 and 2006.
Lou completed his Mathematics degree at Towson, and received his teaching certification in 1995. He has taught at North Carroll High School where he was head of the Math department,and senior class sponsor. He has been at Sylvan since 2001, teaching everything from the beginning reading to Calculus. Lou enjoys the moments when students connect the logical reasoning of mathematics with their other school courses and programs at Sylvan, and return just to share their progress in school.
Gregory Novalis has had a variety of experiences in teaching including
teaching and tutoring math students of varying ages in the U.S. and abroad, teaching theology and New Testament Greek, and homeschooling four children. Greg attended Columbia University in New York City and earned his Bachelor of Arts in Humanities from C.W. Post College, Long Island University. In addition, he has completed post-graduate work in Christian Theology.
Josh graduated from Shippensburg University of PA with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and recently received National Board Certification. He currently teaches 6th grade science at North Carroll Middle School. Josh has been an instructor at Sylvan Learning Center for 3 years and instructs students in the areas of reading, math, writing, Algebra, and study skills.
Ben has worked for Sylvan Learing Centers for 3 years. He currently is a Geometry teacher at Winters Mill High School.
Kristen is a third grade teacher at Mt Airy Elementary. She has worked for Sylvan for 3 years helping students in Pre-K to high school achieve in reading and math, writing, and study skills
Ms. Melissa had been working for the Sylvan of Westminster since 2006. Her background in special education and reading has been a great attribute to our staff.
Ms. Natalie is currently a special education resource teacher for Taneytown Elementary. Natalie joined our staff after receiving her certification from McDaniel College. She works with our elementary through high school students with reading, math, and study skills.
Linda has been a wonderful addition to our staff. Retired from Howard County Public Schools in 2007, she is a former middle and high school English teacher. She is currently an adjunct professor at Carroll County Community College. Linda has a passion for English and writing and a keen sense of organization for our Study Skills students.
Sarah is a middle school science teacher with Baltimore County Schools. She enjoys working with the students in all areas and age groups. Sarah rides horses in her spare time at her farm in Taneytown. Ask her about her husband, the bull rider!
Melissa is a third grade teacher for Carroll County schools. She has certifications in mathematics and special education. She works with kids of all age levels and subject areas. Her major in Deaf Studies has been very useful to our high school students who elect to learn sign language.
Nicole joins our staff as a middle school English teacher with certification through high school English and in school counseling. She is a National Junior Honor Society advisor as well as the supervisor for the schools literary magazine. Nicole enjoys working with our younger readers as well in teaching them to be confident and feel good about themselves.
Sharon is a published scientist in the area of biochemistry. She is a Cum Laude graduate of Mt. St. Mary's College with a degree in Biochemistry. She helps our high school students with their Biology, Chemistry, and Physics but also has the great ability to be patient and kind to our younger students who may need help with science or math understanding. She loves helping our Study Skills students understand the importance of organization and time management as well.
