Laura Carbonaro

Instructor

Laura Carbonaro, Sylvan Instructor
I am a new instructor with Sylvan Learning Center and am enjoying getting to know the students and other staff members. I have a bachelor degree in secondary education, majoring in Earth Science and minoring in mathematics and geology. While living in Washington State I taught both middle school and high school. I also did some substitute teaching in middle, high and alternative high schools. I have tutored children in the past and really enjoy the one-on-one instruction delivery. While earning my degree in education I taught an after school science program called Mad Science. As a Mad Science instructor I visited elementary schools in the area and delivered science curriculum in a fun and interactive way to students that were signed up for the program. The program ran about six weeks, with one after school session per week. I also worked as a camp counselor during one summer for an area day camp. As a camp counselor we honed in on outdoor skills such as archery, compassing, campfire cooking, kayaking and so forth. I am looking forward to my time at Sylvan Learning Center and helping students to achieve academic success!

Nancy Butowski

Instructor

Nancy Butowski has been teaching students at Sylvan since 2001. She is certified to teach nearly all of Sylvan's programs, but particularly enjoys teaching reading and math to middle school students. Her favorite part of teaching is watching the students achieve their academic goals. Ms. Nancy gains a lot of personal satisfaction in helping students improve their critical thinking processes and knowing they can use their new skills in every aspect of their lives.

Byron Hohrein

Instructor

Byron received a BA in Natural Science and Mathematics from Thomas Edison State College, and started working for Sylvan in June 2002. He specializes in math and science and appreciates the opportunity to work with students in small groups. Byron is energized when he sees a student who is having trouble begin to work independently and confidently. As he says, "teaching students how to learn is as important as the material they are learning."
