Center Instructor

As a part-time Instructor at Sylvan, your primary responsibilities are:

  • Just Teaching! No Lesson Plans. No Preparation.



    If you aspire to inspire, then we want you on our team!


    You will be trained on the Sylvan curriculum and given the tools to teach in a 3:1 setting. As a Sylvan Instructor, you will provide personalized instruction in Reading, Writing, Math, Study Skills, SAT/ACT prep and State exams to students of all levels.


    As a successful Instructor, you will teach Sylvan programs, supervise, interact with and motivate students during instruction, reward students for completed assignments, evaluate and document student progress, and communicate student needs to the center manager. You will also inspire students by developing rapport with them and establishing a fun learning environment, maintaining a positive attitude and demonstrating enthusiasm for teaching and for Sylvan.

    We require:


    • Bachelor’s degree
    • Minimum 1 year of teaching or tutoring experience
    • State level teaching certification (current or expired, not required for math instruction)

  • In Home Tutor

    Tutor Responsibilities

    Tutor will be responsible for:

    • Completing orientation required by Sylvan.
    • Ensuring compliance with Sylvan policies.
    • Contacting customers to set mutually agreeable dates and times for tutoring sessions in increments of one hour or more and notifying the Sylvan Director of the schedule.
    • Interacting with the Sylvan Director, to include the following: developing and communicating a personal plan for the parent and student, submitting a written log of tutoring session hours, notes, academic, safety and customer satisfaction issues and any changes in the schedule immediately following each tutoring session and checking in as needed.
    • Providing all materials necessary for tutoring students.
    • Tutoring students in the method and manner determined appropriate for the students.

    Student Interaction:
    • Conduct sessions with students to understand their current academic status and goals. Administering learning style inventories to the students.
    • Greeting students, exhibiting a personal interest in them as individuals and being aware of students' special interests.
    • Praising and encouraging students with sincere enthusiasm.
    • Delivering tutoring sessions by working directly with students’ homework, tests, curriculum, etc. May utilize additional resources books, questions or other materials as needed.
    • Reviewing students’ schoolwork such as homework and tests and working through answers.
    • Checking for students’ understanding and retention and providing additional exercises as needed.
    • Maintaining a positive attitude and demonstrating enthusiasm for the job and for the company.

    Parent Interaction:
    • Contacting the parent to introduce one’s self.
    • Conferring with parents during the initial session to understand the parent’s goals.
    • Scheduling tutoring sessions.
    • Providing the parent and the student with a personalized plan and progress updates.
    • Meeting briefly with the parent at each session to check in, check out and set goals for the next session.
    • If requested, provide parents progress updates, review results, provide additional exercises that the student can work on.
    • Obtain parent’s signature to confirm session completion.
    • Recommend additional materials for parent to purchase for home use.

    Position Requirements

    Requires a bachelor’s degree, with subject matter expertise. Previous teaching or tutoring experience is required. Also requires a teaching certification to tutor reading to elementary school students. Must be computer literate and have daily access to a computer with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and an email address.

    Excellent customer service skills and strong communication skills are required. Must be able to establish rapport and effective relationships with parents and students, be highly motivated to work with students and maintain flexible hours to accommodate parent and student schedule needs.
    Ability to pass reference checks and a background check.
