Thomas R Jennings

Executive Director

Tom is the Franchisee operating this Sylvan Learning Center. Tom's background includes a Bachelor of Science in Commerce from the University of Virginia in 1987 and 10 years of sales and sales management experience. He has owned this center for 10 years and also has a center in Danville. Tom is married and has 4 children.

Bob Morgan

Center Director

A graduate of James Madison University, he taught for nearly 10 years at the college level and has more than 25 years of media, marketing and teaching experience. He was Center Director of the Roanoke Sylvan Learning Center for two years before assuming a similar position in Lynchburg. He and his wife, Kathi, have two grown daughters (one a teacher and one an actress) and three grandchildren.

Whitney Cranfill

Education Coordinator

Whitney has her Bachelor's Degree in Biology, with Teacher Licensure, from Longwood University. Whitney joined our staff in 2006 as an instructor and currently oversees our educational programs. She's licensed with the
Commonwealth of Virginia in Biology and Life Science. Whitney is married and has two children.

Hunter Hamilton

Instructor/Instructional Assistant

Hunter is from Jackson, Tennessee and has lived in Lynchburg for the past
two years. He attended the University of Tennessee at Martin and has a
Bachelor's of Music degree in Music Education, which includes a K-12 teacher's licensure. He is also currently pursuing his Master of Divinity degree at Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary at Liberty University. When not working or studying, he enjoys a good movie with friends or an engaging book.

Chris Carpenter

Math Specialist/Instructor

Chris is a math teacher at Amherst High School and a formerly an adjunct math instructor at Central Virginia Community College. He provides support in programs from high school maths through college-level math.

Elaine Curtis

Instructor

Elaine earned her Bachelor's Degree in history from the University of Texas. She has a secondary teaching certificate (history and Spanish) as well as an elementary certificate. She joined the Sylvan staff in 2005. Elaine, who is married and has two daughters, enjoys reading and watching classic movies.

Derrick Dews

Instructor

Derrick is a veteran instructor with more than 13 years experience in the Lynchburg City Schools. A graduate of Lynchburg College, Derrick supports students in math, reading and study skills.

Amber Henry

Instructor

Amber is a second year student at Liberty University School of Law. In 2010, she received her teaching licensure in Elementary Education and Spanish from Bethel University in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Amber has traveled abroad many times, each time increasing her interest in international relations and international justice, in addition to her passion for Spanish, people, and serving. Amber's hope is to be an advocate in Latin America, helping the impoverished and invisible move through the justice system. In her few moments of spare time, she enjoys reading, cooking, and photography.

Laura Issler

Instructor

Laura is a Liberty University graduate and licensed teacher. She supports math and reading programs and is also an instructor for Sylvan's off-site ACE IT! programs.

Laura Jones

Instructor

Laura has her Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, with Teacher
Licensure. She also has a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction and
is currently pursuing her EdS degree in Teaching and Instruction. Laura
joined Sylvan in April of 2008 and instructs students of all levels and
subjects. Laura enjoys working with a variety of ages and levels at Sylvan
and in other venues. Laura is a passionate hiker and you can usually find her on the trails over the weekend.

Stacy Merriam

Instructor

Stacy, a licensed teacher with both bachelors and masters degrees from Liberty University, is a senior instructor with more than fours years experience at Sylvan. She supports, reading, writing, SAT, study skills, elementary-level math and French students.

Henrietta Ocran

Instructor

Henrietta is originally from Ghana, Africa. She graduated from Liberty University with a BS in Special Education. She teaches Math, Reading and Study Skills here at Sylvan. She also works at Amazement Square as a Museum Educator. Her hobbies are reading, hiking, singing and watching movies.

Rachel Rich

Instructor

Rachel Rich has a B.S. in Elementary Education from Liberty University. She
has a Master's of Education as a Reading Specialist with additional Special Education Licensure also from Liberty University. She has been working with the Lynchburg Sylvan Learning Center for the last two years teaching Beginning Reading, Academic Reading, and Mathematics. She celebrated her third year of marriage in 2010.

Karen Riordan

Education Consultant

Karen has her Bachelor's Degree in elementary education from James Madison University. Karen joined our staff in 2009 and is an education consultant directing the center's school contacts.

Rachel Robinson

Instructor

Rachel is a licensed teacher and a graduate of Liberty University. She supports students in SAT, math, reading and study skills.

Mary Soles

Instructor

Mary has bachelors and masters degrees from Longwood College/University, earned twenty-five years apart. She has more than 30 years teaching experience as a middle and high school English teacher and, more recently, as a librarian. The mother of two girls, she enjoys reading and beach-going. Mary joined the Sylvan staff in 2006 and instructs students in beginning and advanced reading, study skills, writing, and SAT Prep.

Ginny Shank

Regional Director

Ginny Shank is a native of Lynchburg and graduate of Bryan College with a B.S. in Elementary Education. She holds a Virginia Collegiate Professional License and is endorsed to teach PreK-3; Elem 3-6; and Middle Grades 6-8. Ginny has 6 years of teaching experience in public and private schools. She was hired as a Sylvan Director of Education in February 2003 and promoted to Center Director in November 2003. In 2006, Ginny became Sylvan’s Regional Director and manages the Ace it! Tutoring program in local schools, Sylvan 1:1, and Prometric Testing Center. She will graduate from Lynchburg College in May, 2012, with an M Ed. in Reading.
Ginny is the proud mother of one daughter, Caroline, and she enjoys reading and writing in her spare time.

Laura Aylor

Customer Service Associate

Laura has a Biology degree from R-MWC and a computer science degree from CVCC. She has worked as a programmer/analyst, computer consultant, and bookkeeper before coming to Sylvan. She is married and has two nearly grown kids. She loves to knit, read, and hike.
