Alisha Washington

Teachers Assistant

I have always enjoyed school and learning different things. I love being around children and watching their eyes light up when they've just learned something new. I have a deep appreciation for teachers and all that they do and wanted to take part in helping them train young minds.

Davore Hartage

Instructor

I have lived in Raleigh, NC for about 10 years. I like to play tennis, read novels, and cook. I enjoy teaching because it feels good to help people understand things. I choose to teach because I have the unique oppurtunity to help a student grasp a concept, and in the process learn from them as well.

Jonathan Todd

Instructor

In my spare time I enjoy going to car shows and working on cars. I also like throwing the ball with my dog. I choose to teach because I enjoy math and making it fun. I like teaching because I enjoy working with students.

Holly Peck

Instructor

I recently moved to the area with my husband as he pursues his Masters at Southeastern Seminary. We are soon taking on the role of parents as we will have a baby girl arriving in September. I have a B.A. in Counseling and Psychology from Toccoa Falls College in North GA. After working with children for several years I have developed a love for education especially teaching younger children how to read. I have pursued Certification in Teaching and have taught first grade for a few years. I love to see children when the "light bulb" experience comes and they are very proud of their accomplishments and confident in themselves.

Brianna Smale

Instructor

I have wanted to be a teacher since I was 8 and I would force my brother, who did not love school, to attend class in my grandparents’ basement during summer vacation. After earning a BS in Secondary Education – Integrated Language Arts from Miami University in Oxford, OH I moved to Atlanta, GA where I taught high school English for 5 years. During my teaching career I became certified to teach gifted level classes and AP Literature.  In addition to teaching English, which allowed me to indulge in my love of books and writing, I was involved in many of the school’s extra-curricular activities. I love the interaction with students that comes with both teaching in a classroom and tutoring. Some of my dearest teaching memories are of helping students accomplishing goals – from admission to Harvard to passing a course after failing it to beating their best time in the 50-meter backstroke.
I am currently pursuing an MA in American and British Literature from North Carolina State University. When I complete my masters program I plan to pursue a PhD in British Literature and teach at the collegiate level.

Kara Evelyn Fleming

Instructor

I am a graduate student at NC State and am working towards my MA in English Literature. I love to read books of all different genres and eras, but my favorite literature is Victorian. Thomas Hardy and Anne Brontë are my favorite Victorian authors. I also enjoy young adult fiction and children’s literature, the “Harry Potter” series and the “Ink Heart” trilogy being two of my favorite from these genres.

I love to teach, and choose to teach, because I want to encourage and inspire students to explore their minds and to realize their own potential. Everyone deserves the opportunity to learn and to develop a love of learning, reading, and writing. Seeing a student’s face light up when they realize that they have learned something new, or that they understand a difficult concept, is priceless! I also love and choose to teach because students are often the best teachers.

Outside of school, reading, and teaching, I love spending time with my wonderful boyfriend, Patrick, my adorable calico cat, Phoebe, and, drinking coffee with friends and family. I love to have a good time, laugh, watch movies, and listen to an eclectic mix of music. One day, I want to live in Tuscany, Italy (Bella Italia!)!

Kathleen Brynes

Instructor

I have been an academic tutor and piano teacher for over 10 years. I love to teach because when I was a child, I was blessed with teachers who made learning fun. I still love learning new things, and I hope the children I teach catch that same excitement about learning.

Dennis Berwyn

Instructor

Dennis Berwyn, 50, born in Washington DC; Mr. Dennis has lived and traveled overseas for much of his life. He communicates in three languages and has an MBA in Management. A small business owner for the last 20 years, Mr. Dennis worked as a manager for a number of large corporations after graduate school. The proud father of 5 kids of his own, Mr. Dennis loves to give back to the community. One way he discovered he could do this was by being a team member at Sylvan Learning Centers. He's been teaching with Sylvan for the last 5 years and loves every minute. Mr. Dennis tells us that why he likes to teach is for the 'light bulb' moments and the satisfaction of knowing he's helped a child learn to love learning. He chooses to teach because he believes our common future lies with every child and by teaching he is creating a better future for us all.

Megan Self

Instructor

In 2006, I graduated from NC State with an undergraduate degree in chemistry. I worked for three years as a chemist in RTP, but I dreamed of being a teacher. My high school science teacher encouraged my love of science and motivated me to pursue science in college. I saw the positive impact that teachers could have on students' lives. I am currently a full-time student earning my masters of teaching degree in science education while I work at Sylvan.

The most rewarding part of teaching is seeing that moment when students finally gain understanding of difficult concepts. They get huge grins on their faces and their eyes light up. Their enthusiam and confidence are contagious, and you find yourself grinning, too! I love learning, and I want to motivate and encourage students like my teacher did. It may sound cliche, but I want to make a difference.
