Our Sylvan trained and certified tutors are dedicated to your child’s success. Working together with you, we will:
Michelle has worked with Sylvan for seventeen years. She started out as an instructor and has worked her way up to become the owner and executive director of the Elizabeth City Sylvan. She earned a B.S. in Elementary Education from East Carolina University and taught Kindergarten in Wilson, NC. She and her husband have two daughters, and they all enjoy traveling and spending time with family.
Michelle appreciates the opportunity Sylvan gives her to change the lives of students and give them skills they will use for a lifetime. She loves hearing about the success that past students experience after accomplishing their goals at Sylvan.
Beth has held various positions with Sylvan for the past eight years. She is originally from Manns Harbor, NC, and she is a graduate of East Carolina University. She enjoys going to the beach, spending time with her husband and daughter, and listening to music. Beth enjoys working at our center so much that she drives here from Greenville!
Beth likes working at Sylvan because it gives her the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children. She also thinks we have a wonderful staff who works well together as a team.
Carolyn has been with Sylvan since 2001. She has a B.S. in Special Education and Human Services and Counseling from Lyndon State College in Vermont. Her extensive knowledge of students with special needs makes her a great assest to our center. Carolyn specializes in individualizing each student's academic program to fully serve each student's needs. She has three children and enjoys hiking, photography, and baking.
Carolyn says, "There is nothing more satisfying than watching a student's face when he 'gets it' and knowing that I have helped the student to reach that moment."
Lindsey is an experienced math teacher who works well with students of all levels. She currently teaches and coaches in the Currituck County School system. She is a graduate of East Carolina University and is now pursuing her master's degree in middle school mathematics education. When she is not teaching, coaching, or studying, Lindsey is busy planning her wedding!
She enjoys working at Sylvan because she is able to see students outside of a school environment. She says, "It is rewarding to see their smiling faces as they enter the room. I enjoy helping students overcome their academic fears and become successful in school."
Pam has been with Sylvan for four years. She is a very accomplished reading instructor who enjoys working with students of all ages.
Martha has extensive teaching experience with students ranging from 8th graders to adults. She earned a degree in English from Barton College and her M.A.Ed. from East Carolina University. She has been married for 36 years and has two children. One is a professor at the University of Texas and one is in law school. When she's not at Sylvan, Martha enjoys sewing, needle work, piano and classical music, and cooking.
Martha likes working at Sylvan because of the low teacher/student ratio, the fact that the students' needs come first, and the way that the students receive immediate and positive feedback after each activity.
"Ms. Louise" has been a part of the Sylvan staff since 2006. She has had experience teaching all grade levels of elementary school, and she also served for eight years as an Instructional Specialist in Elizabeth City. She received her B.S. in Elementary Education from Florida State University and her M.S. in Primary Education from East Carolina University. She is originally from Cincinnati, is married, and has one daughter and two granddaughters.
Louise enjoys working at Sylvan because she gets to interact with children and use her skills while she is retired.
Heather has been working for Sylvan for three years. She is originally from Vermont, but graduated salutatorian of her class at Pasquotank County High School. She has incredible patience and skill when it comes to instructing our math students.
Heather says, "I love being able to work with so many different kinds of students at so many different levels. It has taught me to appreciate every student for who he/she is."
Ashley grew up in South Mills and is now attending COA. She assists our teachers by making sure they have the materials needed for each instructional hour. She is also the friendly face that welcomes the students into our instructional area. Ashley's favorite things about working at Sylvan are helping others and being around the students.
