LeAnne Floyd

Center Director

LeAnne has been with Sylvan since 1998 and is also the director of the Ladson center. She began as a Sylvan teacher while working in the school system as a middle school English teacher. LeAnne also knows first-hand how Sylvan can improve SAT scores. She enrolled in our program when she was a senior in high school and improved her score over 100 points! LeAnne is a graduate of The University of South Carolina. The Lowcountry Sylvan Learning Centers have won many Sylvan national awards under her leadership.

Ellen Greis

Director of Education

Ellen Greis is the Assistant Director of Education at our Sylvan location. She received her Bachelor’s degree in English and Secondary Education with a Theater minor from Thiel College in Greenville, Pennsylvania. She is a member of Sigma Tau Delta (an international English honor society), and Kappa Delta Pi (an international education honor society). She has experience teaching preschool, middle school, and high school. Ellen has been with Sylvan for two years.

Ms. Shannon

Assistant Director of Education

Shannon Clark started working at a Virginia Sylvan as an algebra and math tutor. She also enjoys tutoring students in Spanish.  She has worked with Sylvan for several years and is currently acting as Assistant Director of Education. Shannon graduated from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia with a bachelor’s degree in international studies and marketing and is currently pursuing her M.B.A with Southern Wesleyan University.  She has lived in Summerville for almost two years and adores all of the flowers and greenery. She is still not used to the pollen, though!  Shannon is a newlywed and has a beautiful boy- a blue pit bull.  Although Shannon is new to this area, helping students ‘get it!’ is not new to any Sylvan center, and she genuinely enjoys playing a part in this process.  She looks forward to seeing you at Sylvan!

Ms. Jeanette

Instructor

Jeanette Deden is a native of Charleston and a graduate of the College of Charleston. She received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education, followed by additional training in learning disabilities. A veteran teacher, Ms. Jeanette has been educating Sylvan students for nine years.

Ms. Ruth

Instructor

Ruth Humbert has lived in Charleston her whole life. After graduating from the College of Charleston, she taught at Upward Bound for Veterans at her alma mater. Ms. Ruth went on to teach at St. John’s High School on John’s Island. While at St. John’s she taught every level of mathematics and sponsored several extracurricular activities, such as the Academic Quiz Bowl team, Mu Alpha (a math honor society), the cheerleading squad, and the junior and senior boards. Additionally, she served as treasurer of the PTSA and chairperson of the local school advisory team. Ms. Ruth has also appeared in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. Ms. Ruth has been with Sylvan for nine years, and she truly enjoys teaching math to students of all ages. She is happy to be educating Sylvan students.

Ms. Hermine

Instructor

Hermine Nelson graduated from Hampton Institute in Virginia with a Bachelor’s of Science in Social Studies and Secondary Education.  Ms. Hermine works in the Charleston County School District and has been with Sylvan for twelve years.

Helen Page received her Bachelor’s of Science in Education from East Carolina University, her Master’s of Education from William and Mary, and her postgraduate degree in Reading from The Citadel. She has experience teaching in the Virginia and South Carolina public school systems. Ms. Helen has been helping Sylvan students reach their full potential for eleven years

Meredith Allyn

Meredith Allyn has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education with a concentration in child development from East Carolina University. She teaches kindergarten at Hunley Park Elementary School, and she loves it! Meredith has been with Sylvan for four years.

Ms. Kirsten

Kirsten Goodwin is blessed to have a loving, devoted husband and a very energetic six year-old son named Duncan. She has a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from East Carolina University. Kirsten has experience teaching in the North Carolina and South Carolina school systems and is certified to teach both typically and exceptionally developing students. Kirsten has been with Sylvan for four years

MS. Stacey

Instructor

Stacey Heyward received her bachelor’s of science degree in psychology from the University of South Carolina. Shortly after completing her undergraduate studies, she received her master’s degree in elementary education from Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia. Stacey is currently a first grade teacher in the Charleston County School District. During her free time, Stacey enjoys spending time with her family and traveling. Stacey has been with Sylvan for two years.

Ms. Sydney

Instructor

Sydney Walmsley attended the College of Charleton Honors College, where she studied Literary and Creative Writing in addition to History and Advanced Mathematical Theory. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree, she went on to earn her Master’s in Fin de Siècle Literature through a joint program with the Citadel and the College of Charleston in only a year and a half. Sydney has numerous publications and related conference appearances dealing with such subjects as imperial legal history and the culmination of 20th century extremist art and mathematics at their intersection. Currently, she is working on her PhD in colonial and post colonial literary studies. She has experience teaching at the secondary and collegiate levels. Sydney has been with Sylvan for two years.

Ms. Joyce

Instructor

Joyce Stier has been involved in the education of children for over 35 years. She began her career with a BA degree in Elementary Education and went on to teach 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades during her teaching career in Massachusetts. Following a move to Florida, she attended Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton and worked on a Masters program in Public Administration. She has taught at many schools in Florida and in Charleston, SC. She has experience in working at both private and public schools for grades K through 6, and has worked on No Child Left Behind programs as well. She finds that working with young children, helping them with their reading, language arts, and math skills, most enjoyable. Helping those in need of special attention and those who just want to get ahead is her greatest pleasure. Working with the children that attend Sylvan Learning Center is a wonderful experience.

Ms. Christen

Instructor

Christen Warrington-Broxton is a certified chemistry teacher with a gifted and talented endorsement. She enjoys tutoring in mathematics, reading, writing, and science. She obtained her bachelor’s of science in chemistry from South Carolina University and her master’s of science in postsecondary education with a focus in the foundations of educations from Troy University. Christen is currently pursuing her PhD in educational studies with a focus in adult learning and development with Lesley University. She is newly married and in her spare time she enjoys reading, gardening, and caring for her cat and three dogs. Christen has been tutoring Sylvan students for two years.
