Sylvan Courses for Credit
May 2008 - There are many reasons students come to Sylvan to earn credits for high school courses. Some have moved or transferred to a new school and need to make up a class. Some have missed time at school or are having trouble with a class and don’t want to fall behind. Some are home-schooled and need added help in specific areas. And some want a competitive edge in math or English or study skills.
Whatever your child’s situation, Sylvan of Lakeland offers the opportunity to earn high school course credits with proven, personalized programs.

On January 6th, READ Lakeland, Inc. kicked off the 2009 Kiss the Pig Campaign. Candidates get votes and sponsors to raise money for READ Lakeland, Inc, which services the 24% of adults in Lakeland who can’t read well enough to get a GED. Annette Miller, Executive Director of Sylvan Learning Center, is a candidate this year. She gave a humorous yet genuine campaign speech, sharing why adult literacy is so important to her personally, as well as to Sylvan’s mission to further education.

Arbor Day at Lakeland Christian School
Arbor Day
For Arbor Day, Neysha Rivera and Michelle Rowland joined the fourth graders at Lakeland Christian School in planting trees. Together they planted three trees on the school campus and the students each got to take home trees to plant at their homes. Sylvan Learning Center is proud to sponsor with LCS and do our part to make the earth a cleaner, healthier environment to live in.

Should I take the SAT or ACT?
September 2008 - The SAT is the most popular college entrance exam in the U.S., both in terms of the number of students who take the test and the number of schools that accept it. The ACT is a close second. Many colleges accept either the ACT or the SAT.
While the SAT is a “reasoning test” designed to test critical thinking skills as well as knowledge, the ACT is an “assessment test” designed to test how much a student has learned in four years of high school. The writing portion of the ACT is optional (though some colleges demand that you take it) and the ACT also contains a section on Science and Data Analysis.

Polk Museum of Art Family Day Festival
Thank you for joining us at Polk Museum of Art.
Come and see Sylvan at Chick-Fil-A!
Every Tuesday night at Chick-fil-a is family night and this past Tuesday we were the sponsors. We made crafts, cards, and gave away gifts. We might have had more fun than the kids! The kids got balloons and ate a great meal. Parents and children sat down and made the crafts together out of construction paper, pipe cleaners, foam letters and other things. On Tuesday, May 20th we will be back, so come to Chick-fil-a and see us.

Valleyview Elementary Spring Voyage
We are proud to sponsor Valleyview’s Spring Voyage to help raise money for the PTA. Everyone had a great time playing games and earning tickets. The kids even got to exchange their tickets for prizes. We gave out goodie bags and met students, parents, and teachers. Many of the kids came to our table to get candy and frisbees. The parents were pleased to see a raffle for a free assessment. A number of Sylvan students were there and had a great time as well. What a fun day!
Celebrating 21 years in Polk County
The Sylvan Learning Center of Lakeland, Florida, celebrated a 23 year anniversary in October 2008. We take great pride in being an active part of the Lakeland community.
