Sylvan Learning of Inverness offers tips to stop stress at the start of the new school year.
For many children, the first day of school doesn’t just mean new teachers and new friends – it can also be a source of anxiety with homework assignments and tests just around the corner. Fortunately, starting the year off on the right foot can help minimize children’s stress levels throughout the year. Parents can help ease anxiety and make a smooth transition from summer to school by starting a routine with their children early in the school year.
Tips and ideas to help children prepare for school and minimize academic stress:
• Get back in the routine.
• Set education goals.
• Develop a relationship with your child’s teacher.
• Homework routine and place.
• Stay on schedule.
• Emphasize organization.
• Encourage learning at home.

Is your child struggling with homework? Is homework a source of family tension? Sylvan has programs that help with the homework “blues”.
Homework Help
This program is for students who simply need structure and supervision to get their homework done. Homework Help is best suited for students that need a little extra support with homework, are relatively independent, but can’t seem to “get it done.” Homework Help Sessions are purchased as blocks of hours that are used when needed during the month.
Homework Support
This is for students who need individualized attention and need to be taught skills that they didn’t grasp in the classroom. They need a teacher to teach them the concepts so they can complete their assignments. These students are typically struggling with concepts that were missed in prior grades but need help to keep their heads above water. Generally, the class is just moving too fast for them. These sessions are regularly scheduled instruction.
Tips To Help Children Master Math
1. Make math practical. Apply math concepts to every day life whenever possible: in shopping, cooking and dining out.
2. Review previously learned math before tackling new assignments. Starting with familiar concepts helps build your child's retention and confidence.
3. Dispel the notion that math is difficult by talking math with your child as you use it in everyday activities.
4. Ask your child's math teacher for a schedule of math topics. Take time to develop two projects or exercises per week that will reinforce what your child is learning in class.
5. Work with your child to solve math problems using multiple methods. This will help your child develop a fuller understanding of the computation concepts.
6. Provide pictorial example of math concepts. Draw or collect pictures of animals, objects or people to show addition, subtraction, division and fractions.
7. Practice percentages with items on sale in catalogs or stores. Encourage your child to compute full price, sales price and net savings.
8. Open a savings account at the bank and help your child establish a savings plan. Or, develop a checkbook or credit card system for your child to use at home. The balance may represent allowance or bonus points that have specific values or prizes.
9. Allow your child to plan the next family trip. Help him or her compute miles, cost of gas, expenses for food, hotel and entertainment.
10. Encourage your child to do math aloud and to explain the series of steps involved in solving the problem.
11. Follow your child's progress through his or her math book, tests and homework.
12. Don't let problems with math linger. Since math builds on previously learned concepts, it's essential to identify and address problems early so they don't compound.
