1st Annual Cleveland Sylvan Read Across America Day Skateboard Art Contest Winners Announced

March 19, 2009

Two students in the Cleveland area were thrilled to be awarded skateboards printed with their own artwork! The student were chosen as the winners of the 1st Annual Cleveland Sylvan Read Across America Day Skateboard Art Contest. Tricia Craig, Center Director for the Sylvan Learning Center in Cleveland, presented the skateboards to Autumn Brown at Lake Forest Middle School and Rhema Matteson at Cleveland Middle School.
Students were asked to create a literature-inspired skateboard design and then actually produce the work on a skateboard-shaped paper template. The contest was sponsored by Sylvan and was successful largely through the cooperation of area art teachers. The Cleveland Sylvan received over 25 entries from area schools. Officials from all of the East Tennessee Sylvans judged the work.
Students Brown and Matteson's entries were incredible, colorful designs inspired by "The Chronicles of Narnia" and "Eragon", respectively.
The contest will be held again starting in October 2009, with entries available at all local middle and high schools.

Sylvan Learning Center of Cleveland Awards $500 to The Bradley/Cleveland Public Education Foundation

December 4, 2008

At a luncheon honoring exceptional teachers of Bradley County and Cleveland City, the Sylvan Learning Center donated $500 to the Bradley/Cleveland Public Education Foundation. Tricia Craig, Center Director for Sylvan, presented the check to Walter Presswood at the gathering. The donation is to be used to fund the Foundation's mini-grant program designed to encourage creative and engaging teaching projects.
As the nation's leading provider of supplemental educational services, Sylvan knows a thing or two about "creative and engaging" teaching, and wishes to encourage this in every community it serves!
Sylvan's Executive Director Lee Pierce says, "We wish to encourage a love of learning by encouraging creative teaching. We work hard to maintain great relationships with local schools so that all of our students can benefit from the resources available to them". The Sylvan Learning Center in Cleveland plans to work with the Foundation and Mr. Presswood again in 2009.
