Meet the Tutors

Sylvan instructors are highly trained and qualified. They are trained in the specific programs they teach and are also certified by the state. Sylvan instructors love to teach and love to learn. Meet our team of staff members:

Corey Kempe

Center Director

Corey is a 1996 graduate of Defiance College with a B.S. in Accounting, Finance, and Business Management. Corey understands that each child has different learning styles. She believes that Sylvan is a great learning environment for children of all ages!

Jen Lacey

Director of Education

I have always been involved with kids, whether it was coaching, babysitting or tutoring. Therefore, my decision to become a teacher was not a very difficult one! I graduated from the University of Toledo in May 2004 with a double major in education and history. I fell in love with the Sylvan philosophy of learning and teaching. Sylvan genuinely is a great place to learn and I am quite confident in our ability to help your student!

Caren Beckett

Owner

Caren is a graduate of Bowling Green State University with her B.S. in Elementary Education. Caren has worked with Sylvan in many different capacities since 1996. Prior to opening the Bowling Green Center in 2001, she worked in Columbus area centers as a techer and Director. Caren comments, "Sylvan offers programs that help students feel successful again. The excitement shown by students when they see their school grades improve is not only rewarding as a Director, but also as an educator."

Craig Beckett

Owner

Craig is a graduate of the University of Toledo and has an MBA from the University of Findlay. He joined Sylvan in April 2006, and prior to that worked as an engineer. Craig and his wife (Caren) are involved in the daily operations of the 3 Sylvan centers they own: Bowling Green, Defiance, and Lima.

Karen Parrish

Instructor

Karen received her Bachelor of Science in Education from BGSU in 1973. She has taught 32 years of FUN teaching to kindergartners. When asked why she likes working at Sylvan, Karen says, "I love working with kids! They are our future...teaching is soooo satisfying!" In her free time, Karen enjoys reading and doing anything outside. She also enjoys spending time with her husband, Denny, and sons, Ryan and Adam. She also loves her two adorable cocker spaniels, Mugsy and Chloe.

Marianne Kiefer

Instructor

Marianne joined our staff in February of 2005. She has a B.S. from Eastern Michigan University. Marianne has 22 years of teaching and administrative experience. She has taught courses in high school English, Composition, Literature, Speech, Theatre, and Media. Marianne enjoys working with the students at Sylvan and watching them improve and grow.

Donna Knisley

Donna has been with our center since September 2004 and has worked with many of our students in several of our programs. Donna enjoys seeing the students achieve success. She feels that watching them display confidence with their work and a smile on their face is worth it all!

Alexis Zippay

Instructor

Alexis is a 2005 graduate of Clarion University of PA with Bachelor's Degrees in Elementary Education and Library Science. In 2010, Alexis completed her Masters's Degree from BGSU in Educational Technology. Alexis is the Library Media Specialist at Ayersville Local Schools. She also coaches cross-country and jr. high girls track. In her spare time, Alexis, likes to watch movies, play the wii, travel and attend sporting events. Alexis, likes working at Sylvan because it is very rewarding to watch student's improve and succeed.

Lyndsi Shininger

Instructor

Lyndsi graduated from Defiance College with a Bachelor's Degree in Middle Childhood Math and Language Arts in 2008. She is currently a long term sub at Fayette Local Schools for 5th and 6th grade math. Lyndsi joined the Sylvan staff in August and truly enjoys the variety of students and their personalities. Lyndsi likes to read and play basketball. Her favorite places are Las Vegas (her brother lives there) and New Mexico for the balloon fiesta.

Andrew Coressel

Instructor

Andrew has his Bachelor's Degree in Integrated Mathematics from Defiance College in May 2009. He is teaching Math at Defiance High School. Andrew was recently married to Elly Mae. He has lived in Defiance nearly his whole life. Andrew enjoys going putt-putt golfing and lifting weights, and being active in his church. Andrew enjoys the positive environment towards teaching and how each instructor gives all the can to get every student the learning necessary to succeed.

Jessica Krouse

Instructor

Jessica is a graduate of Kalida High School and Bowling Green State University. Jessica resides in Kalida with her parents and her siblings. In Jessica's free time, she enjoys playing volleyball, reading, and spending time with her family. Jessica is currently substitute teaching in Putnam and Allen Counties. Jessica says, "Sylvan is a great place that offers each student an opportunity to improve and enhance their education."

Michelle Ellerbrock

Instructor

Michelle is a graduate of OSU Lima with a Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education. She has been working as a substitute teacher in Allen, Putnam, and Van Wert counties. In her free time, Michelle enjoys spending time with her family, friends, reading and shopping. Michelle enjoys working at Sylvan because she has the opportunity to work with such wonderful students and teachers!

Ben Osterland

Instructor

Ben grew up and went to Wadsworth City Schools in Northeast Ohio. Upon graduation, Ben attended Bluffton College where he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education. This summer he will graduate with his Master's Degree from BGSU. Ben and his wife Lisa have 2 boys Jaden and Trevor. They are big Cleveland Brown's fans. Ben has taught in Bryan City Schools and a Kindergarten Intervention teacher and a first grade teacher. Ben is excited about working with Sylvan because being a classroom teacher, he is able to see first hand how a program like Sylvan can improve a child's education. He is excited to be part of a program like Sylvan.

Lisa Osterland

Lisa graduated from Archbold High School and is a graduate from Bluffton University. She has her Bachelor's Degree in Middle Childhood Education specializing in Math, Language Arts, and Reading. Lisa and her husband Ben have 2 boys, Jaden and Trevor. In her free time, Lisa enjoys scrapbooking and she is an avid reader. Lisa likes working at Sylvan because she enjoys working with students of all ages and finds it rewarding to watch them grow and succeed.

Heather Stoops

Instructor

Heather graduated from Ashland University with a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education. She will be starting her Master's program soon. Heather has taught in Ohio and in England. She is currently in her second year at Bryan City Schools as a 1st grade teacher. Heather enjoys scrapbooking, running marathons, and traveling. Heather is excited about joining the Sylvan staff because she enjoys spending time with each student and helping them meet their goals!

Heather Miller

Instructor

Heather graduated from BGSU in 2006 with a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhoos Development. Since then, she has taken additional course work to obtain a Masters in Reading. Heather has been a substitute teacher in various schools in the four county area. She is currently a lead preschool teacher at Creative Child Development Center. She has been there two years and enjoys working with the children. Heather enjoys spending her free time with her family and friends. She really enjoys being outdoors. Heather is excited to work at Sylvan and work with children in small groups. She is excited to see the improvement that students make and see the students enjoy learning. Heather's hope is that the students will become life long learners and be successful in their educational career and throughout life.

Erika Buchholz

Erika has a Bachelor's Degree in Middle childhood Education specializing in Math and Language Arts. She is currently working on her Science endorsement. Erika is married to her husband Shawn. She enjoys reading books by Nicholas Sparks. Erika just completed her first year as a fifth grade Math teacher at Defiance Elementary School.

Gabe Oberlin

Instructor

Gabe attended OSU and majored in Horticulture and minored in Latin American Studies. He has his license in vocational teaching and integrated math teaching and is currently attending BGSU for his masters in Education Administration. Gabe also works at Four County Career Center, where he teaches Horticulture. On Gabe's spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family; his wife Melanie and kids Heather, Katie, Mike and Megan. He also enjoys working in his garden.

Amy Moening

My hobbies include dance, reading, and hanging out with my family and friends. I obtained my bachelors and masters in middle childhood education from Wright State University. I have taught 3 years as a 7th grade science teacher in Louisville, KY before moving back to Ohio. I love helping students get motivated to succeed in their own education.

Eric Drummelsmith

I earned my bachelor's degree in adult and young adult language arts education from the University of Toledo. My favorite thing about working at Sylvan is seeing the students surpass their own expectations and discovering they really do have what it takes to be a successful student. Some of my other interests include playing music, writing fiction, and watching movies.

Angela Perchikoff

Instructor

I was born and raised in Defiance and I graduated from Defiance High School. I graduated from Defiance College in May of 2010 with my Bachelor's Degree in middle childhood education: language arts and math. I have been a substitute teacher for Defiance City and Stryker Local Schools. I enjoy collecting books, and I love reading and writing.

Cory Stephens

Instructor

Cory enjoys traveling and his life goal is to visit every Major League Baseball park in America. Cory graduated in 2008 from Bath High School and recently graduated from Bluffton University with his BA in Middle Childhood Education with the concentration in math and social studies. He was recently employed with Shawnee Middle School and has worked with first through fourth grade reading programs.
