Center Instructor

We are always excited to meet energetic, skilled teachers interested in a part-time Instructor position. As a part-time Instructor at Sylvan, your primary responsibilities are:

  • Just Teaching! No Lesson Plans. No Preparation.

You will be trained on the Sylvan curriculum and given the tools to teach in a 3:1 setting. As a Sylvan Instructor, you will provide personalized instruction in Reading, Writing, Math, and Study Skills to students of all levels.

As a successful Instructor, you will teach Sylvan programs, supervise, interact with and motivate students during instruction, reward students for completed assignments, evaluate and document student progress, and communicate student needs to the center manager. You will also inspire students by developing rapport with them and establishing a fun learning environment, maintaining a positive attitude and demonstrating enthusiasm for teaching and for Sylvan.

We require:
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least one to two years of experience in education recommended
  • State level teaching certification (current or expired)

This is a part-time position. Hours are flexible and range from 4-10 hours per week.

Upper Level Math Instructor

Our recent growth in high school math students has allowed us to post a new position for a part-time math instructor. As an Instructor at Sylvan, your primary responsibility is teaching. Lesson planning and preparation are done for you. As a part-time Sylvan Mathematics Instructor, you will be trained to use the Sylvan curriculum and be given the tools to teach in a small group, 3:1 setting and to assist student with mathematics homework. You will provide personalized mathematics instruction including pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry to middle school and high school students. If you aspire to inspire, then we want you on our team.

As a successful Instructor, you will:

Deliver Quality Mathematics Education:

  • Teach using Sylvan based programs
  • Provide individualized instruction to help students complete school assignments
  • Use manipulatives and technology to teach and reinforce concepts
  • Supervise, interact with, and motivate students during instruction hour
  • Reward students for completed assignments
  • Evaluate and document student progress
  • Communicate student needs to the center director

We require:
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Confidence in your own mathematical ability
  • Proven teaching experience and demonstrated skills in: Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry. Similar experience in Trigonometry and Calculus (including AP Calculus) is highly desired

Administrative/Teacher Assistant

Sylvan Learning Center of Columbus is seeking an Administrative/Teacher Assistant to begin immediately. This position will report to the Director of Education. As an assistant you will become familiar with Sylvan's prescription-writing methods and assist in the smooth operation of the center. As an employee in our center you will handle a variety of clerical tasks to help meet our student's needs such as reception, filing, and copying.

Duties include:
  • Obtaining and filing the learning materials needed for each student for each lesson
  • Assisting our certified teachers during instruction
  • Assisting with student assessments
  • Seating students
  • Checking attendance
  • Ensuring smooth instruction period transitions
  • Maintaining center order and cleanliness
  • Monitoring the in-house supply store
  • Scheduling students
  • Answering phones
  • Fielding questions and concerns from parents
  • Scheduling and confirming appointments

The number of hours will vary, but will average between 15-20 per week. The schedule is somewhat flexible but is primarily an evening position. Qualified candidates will be available to work weekday afternoons/evenings after 3:00pm. Additionally, the center is open on Saturdays and the candidate will be expected to assist with testing new students as needed on Saturdays.

Additional requirements are:
  • A background in education and customer service is preferred
  • High School Diploma required, college preferred
  • Knowledge of basic office equipment
  • Effective problem-solving and communications skills
  • Solid customer service skills
  • Detail oriented
  • Some computer and typing skills a must
