Lynn Hoagland has been the franchise owner for the Troy and Utica, Michigan, Sylvan Learning Centers since 1985. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Michigan State University and a Master’s Degree with a major emphasis in reading from Oakland University. Lynn has over 15 years of classroom teaching experience in the Pontiac and Rochester school systems. She has three daughters, two sons-in-law and five beautiful grandchildren. When Lynn isn't working, she's travelling between Michigan, Colorado and California to visit her family.
Little known fact: The true king of her household is Lynn's Bishon, "Duncan."
Kim joined Sylvan in December of 2002 as Center Director of another center and came to Troy in December, 2006. Kim holds a Degree in Interpersonal and Public Communication from Central Michigan Univ., did her graduate work in counseling at Jersey City State University and is a certified Student Assistance Counselor. She and her husband, Tom, like to spend time with their sons, Alec and Jake. They also enjoy reading, golfing, home improvement projects and spending time with their extended families. Kim thinks she has the BEST job in the world because "We change lives!"
Little known fact: There are only four degrees of separation between Kim and Kevin Bacon!
Jessica joined Sylvan in July of 2004 after earning her BA in Education from Michigan State University. She worked at the Grosse Pointe Farms and St. Clair Shores Sylvan locations before coming to Troy in March of 2007. Jessica enjoys spending time with her husband, Tim, and their NEW baby boy,Caden James, born in October of 2013. Jessica says she LOVES teaching at Sylvan as well as meeting with parents, managing programs and meeting with teachers and school personnel. Little known fact: Jessica loves math and even won a Math Pentathlon in the 2nd grade!
Katie is the newest member of our Troy Sylvan management team, joining us in April of 2013. She graduated from Oakland University in Auburn Hills with a BS in elementary education and a math endorsement. Katie grew up in the Rochester area and currently lives in Sterling Heights with her dogs, Maddie and Rain. Katie enjoys working out and spending time with friends, family and her doggies. Little known fact: Katie has completed a full round of P90X!
Jeff is our resident "math guru" and says his favorite part about working at Sylvan is interacting with his students and showing them that math doesn’t have to be “lame.” He also loves those “light bulb looks” when it all finally makes sense. Laughter is the key to Jeff’s successful teaching style and it helps with his management position as well!
When Jeff isn't working, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Darcy, and their children, Zach and Emma, being outdoors, playing board games or bowling and other activities.
Little known fact: Jeff has been on staff here at Sylvan longer than anyone with the exception of our franchise owner!
Mackenzie is a welcome addition to our Troy Sylvan Learning Center, joining us in early 2013. She was born and raised and is still living in Royal Oak where she divides her time between being a student, babysitting AND working at Sylvan! Mackenzie attends Wayne State University where she is majoring in Special Education with a minor in math. She hopes to one day become a teacher and hopes to be able to tutor here at Sylvan as well! Mackenzie spends her spare time with her very large family and enjoys dancing, teaching polish dance and volunteering. Little known fact: Mackenzie was crowned 2010 Polish Women's Alliance Zamek Queen!
Matthew lived in Chicago Heights, IL before going off to college where he graduated with a BA in education and mathematics from Concordia University in Wisconsin. He later earned his MS through Capella University and has been living in MI since 2003. He joined the Troy Sylvan tutoring family in 2010 and tutors our reading, math and study skills students as well as our ACT Prep candidate. When not working at Sylvan or teaching at a nearby school, Matthew says he can be found running, working out or reading books by C.S. Lewis and R.A. Salvatore. He doesn’t have any pets, but says he could see himself becoming a dog owner some day. Matthew says he loves being part of an organization that genuinely puts students first and says that “seeing a young learner reach potentional and start believing in himself reminds me why I get up in the morning!” Little known fact: Matthew admits that, while he loves reading, computer games tend to take up more of his time!
Mary Jane tutored at three other Sylvan Learning Centers before landing in Troy in 2007. She describes herself as a “Detroiter through and through.” She holds many licenses and certifications along with her BA from Barat College in Lake Forest, IL and a Masters in Education from Wayne State University. Mary Jane teachers our beginning readers as well as our older students and especially loves teaching our Academic Reading and Writing programs! Mary Jane is a Licensed Professional Counselor and, when not working here, works at the Schultz Funeral Home conducting support groups and individual counseling sessions in bereavement. She loves the diversity of the students here and the challenge of meeting their individual needs. Little known fact: Mary Jane has kissed the Blarney Stone!
Colleen grew up in Bloomfield Township and attended high school in Royal Oak, going on to Michigan State University for her Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work and earning her teaching credentials from the University of Michigan, Flint. She came to teach at our Troy Sylvan location in 2008. Besides tutoring students here at Sylvan in reading, math and study skills, Colleen works part-time at Pine Trace Golf Club (where she’s worked for over 18 years!) and substitute teaches for the Troy School District. Colleen says she loves working at Sylvan because everyone is friendly and it is a very positive environment in which to work! Little known fact: Colleen and her family vacation every summer at White Birch Lodge.
Dena has been a tutor here at our Troy Sylvan Learning Center since November of 2005 and teaches most of our subjects including Reading, Study Skills, Math Essentials and Algebra. She attended Baker College for math and education and earned her B.S. at Oakland University and her Masters in Library Science from Wayne State. Little known fact: The house next door to Dena’s is Madonna’s childhood home and there are often passers-by that stop and take pictures!
Wade grew up in California and has lived many places, mostly in the western U.S. Wade received his BS in Teacher Education from George Fox University in Oregon and is currently working on his Master’s at Wayne State University. Wade has been a tutor here in our Troy Sylvan Learning Center since May of 2008 and teaches primarily our older students who need help with Algebra, Algebra 2, Geometry and Study Skills. He says he likes working at Sylvan because of the individualized programs and small class size. Little known fact: Wade met his wife while teaching at the University in Korea and he has also lived and taught in Thailand!
Jamie grew up in the Troy area and has also lived in Canada (near Toronto). She attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and graduated with a B.A. in Education with a major in English and a minor in Psychology. She joined the Troy Sylvan team as one of our strongest tutors in October, 2007. In her spare time, Jamie enjoys spending time with friends and family and especially loves reading, writing poetry, listening to music and “anything that involves self-reflection.” When asked what she likes about teaching here at our Troy Sylvan, Jamie says “I most enjoy seeing students improve leaps and bounds” and “seeing kids become more responsible, more engaged and successful!” She especially enjoys teaching our Reading, Writing and Study Skills students! Jamie has also been very successful in helping our students prepare for their ACT exams. Little known fact: Jamie loves classic rock and 80’s “hair bands!”
Amy hails from Sterling Heights but didn’t stay put for long! She attended Liberty University in Virginia, earning her undergrad degree and then moved to Thailand and attended Philadelphia Biblical University, earning a Masters Degree in International Education with an emphasis in Language Arts. Amy met her husband in Korea, married him in 1999 and they returned to the United States in June, 2007. She joined us here in Troy in October of that same year and has been an outstanding tutor and part of our management team before taking a full time teaching job at a nearby charter school. Amy says she LOVES teaching at Sylvan and it thrills her to teach the Beginning Readers and help them to gain confidence in their reading skills. Amy also teaches our other programs like Academic Reading and Writing as well. Little known fact: Ms. Amy speaks “a little” Korean and “a little bit more” Thai.
Kristin started here in Troy during January of 2011 and came to us with a BS in Secondary Education Communication and Language Arts from Wayne State University. She grew up in the Downriver area and moved to Troy and then to Royal Oak where she now resides. Kristin lives in a home she describes as “The Money Pit,” with her husband and son – but adds that “the family loves it.” Kristin works well tutoring our smaller children in the Beginning Reading program and can also teach Academic Reading and Math Essentials. Little known fact: Kristin’s household is actually run by the “king” of the house – an adopted kitty named “Merlin.”
Nancy grew up in Livonia. She attended Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant where she earned her BS in Mathematics and Secondary Education. Nancy came to our Sylvan of Troy in February of 2011 and we're so glad she did! She is one of our strongest math tutors and works with our Algebra, Algebra 2 and Geometry students as well as helping our high school students with math concepts even beyond those! She also teaches Reading! Her parents have a cottage in South Haven but Nancy resides in Royal Oak with her fiancee. She also has one sister who is a metallurgist for Bell Helicopter in Texas and her parents are retired. Asked what she likes to do in her spare time, Nancy replies that she enjoys all kinds of art, baking and gardening. Nancy enjoys teaching at Sylvan because she likes to prove that ALL students are capable of success with math! Little known fact: Nancy lived and taught in Hampton, VA, before moving back to MI.
Rachel hails from the Grayling area in Northern Michigan and attended MSU, earning her degree in Elementary Education. She came to teach at Sylvan of Troy in July of 2012 and has already been named as a favorite tutor of some of our reading students! Rachel currently lives in Troy and, along with her boyfriend and her dog named "Brogus," she is fixing up her new house! Little known fact: When Rachel isn't working at Sylvan, she can be found at Anderson Middle School, working as their Intervention Specialist.
Shanna is yet another northern Michigander who was born in Sault Ste. Marie but grew up in Clarkston where she still resides. Shanna earned her degree from the University of Michigan in Flint where she studied elementary education with a major in science and a minor in math. She began working for the Troy Sylvan in September of 2012. When not teaching reading, math or writing at Sylvan, Shanna subs for the Clarkston Community school district. Shanna describes her family as "wonderful," and adds that besides her parents, she has a brother, sister-in-law and an AMAZING nephew named "Gavin," as well as 2 cats, "Lucy" and "Callie." Asked what she likes best about teaching here, Shanna says she loves that the students are positive and willing to do their best even after a long day of school. Little known fact: Shanna loves to sew and has been figure skating since before she was THREE years old!
Christy grew up in Lake Orion and lived in Fort Myers, Florida later where she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education at FL Gulf Coast University. When she's not tutoring at our Troy Sylvan, Christy is a training coordinator for Wright & Filippis, Inc. She enjoys running, biking, playing softball and hanging out with her dog, Hurley. Christy likes teaching reading and math at Sylvan because she enjoys seeing students succeed at something with which they've been struggling. Little known fact: Christy also enjoys rock climbing and obstacle racing!
Megan grew up in Monroe, Louisiana and lived in Kansas and Chicago before moving to Michigan. She attended Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education (along with a Montessori Certification). Megan came to teach at our Troy Sylvan location in 2013.
Besides tutoring students here at Sylvan in beginning reading, academic reading and writing, Megan teaches at Japhet School in Clawson. She has two boys at home -- Garrett is 2 and Grant is 12 -- and they have a dog named "Snow." Megan says she loves tutoring at Sylvan because she loves that "spark" that goes off in a child's eyes when he learns something for the first time!
Little known fact: Megan travels to Atlanta, Georgia, as often as she can to see family!
Haylie is a native Michigander, growing up in West Bloomfield and Troy. She is an Oakland University graduate, earning her B.A. in English, History and Secondary Education. Haylie joined Sylvan Learning of Troy in the fall of 2013 and, when she's not tutoring in reading, writing or math at Sylvan, she is a guest teacher at Troy High School.
Haylie and her husband live in Troy with their Parrot, Stormy, and often visit Haylie's parents and sister for family dinners. Haylie enjoys teaching at Sylvan because of the positive, happy atmosphere, and her favorite subject to teach is reading to our middle and high school students.
Little known fact: Haylie is very crafty and made all the bouquets at her wedding out of roses she fashioned with coffee filters!
Kia grew up on a hog and dairy farm in Wisconsin. She attended and graduated from Calvin College and West Chester University in PA before landing in Troy, MI in the fall of 2013. Kia has a Master's Degree in Education and is also a certified guidance counselor. She taught high school special education for 5 years and was a middle school guidance counselor before moving back to Michigan to be closer to family. Kia tutors Sylvan Beginning Reading as well as Academic Reading to our older students and says she loves teaching reading here at Sylvan! Kia and her husband live in Berkley and are expecting their first child in May. When not working here, she enjoys yoga, taking walks, reading, listening to music, baking, traveling, volunteering and spending time with family and friends. Kia loves teaching at Sylvan because of the opportunity to get to know so many of our students.
Little known fact: Kia has family throughout the U.S., Turkey, United Kingdom and Nigeria and hopes someday to visit them all!
Natalie was born in Tennessee, the fourth of five children, and moved to Michigan when she was 11, living mostly in the Lansing and Mt. Pleasant areas. She attended Central Michigan University where she graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in History and English and a teaching certificate in secondary education. Natalie taught high school in Montana, elementary school in Indianapolis and then moved back to Michigan in the fall of 2013. Natalie teaches reading and math to all our age groups and, when not working at Sylvan of Troy, she is a guest teacher in the area districts. Natalie says she enjoys reading books and watching movies but, most of all, she loves to travel. Natalie loves teaching at Sylvan because of the positive atmosphere.
Little known fact: Natalie studied abroad in Ireland and did her student teaching in Australia!
April grew up in Fraser, Michigan, and now resides in Warren with her husband and their son, Caleb. She is an Oakland University graduate, earning her B.A. in Elementary Education and her Master’s Degree in Early Childhood. April joined Sylvan Learning of Troy in 2013 and teaches our Beginning Reading, Academic Reading and Writing programs to students of all grade levels. When she’s not teaching at Sylvan, April enjoys scrapbooking, spending time with her family and watching the Detroit Tigers. In fact, April and her dad have been to 22 consecutive Detroit Tiger Opening Days!
April enjoys tutoring at Sylvan of Troy because she can watch each child reach his/her potential at his/her own pace.
Little known fact: April and her husband have visited 11 different baseball stadiums and hope to visit them all!
Steve grew up right here in Rochester Hills, Michigan, the third of four children. He attended Western Michigan University and earned his B.A. in History, Social Studies and Secondary Education before pursuing his certification in Special Education at Saginaw Valley State University. Steve joined the Sylvan of Troy team in the winter of 2013.
Steve tutors Academic Reading as well as Math Essentials to our elementary and middle school students and says it's so much fun teaching here at Sylvan because of the different ages and levels of students with whom he works! Steve says he especially enjoys teaching reading to our upper elementary and middle school students.
Steve and his wife reside in St. Clair Shores with their goldfish, "Chester."
When he's not working here, Steve is teaching special education at Atherton Community School in Burton.
Little known fact: Steve has been playing hockey since he was 8 years old!
Robert is a native Michigander, born and raised in Clawson. He is an Albion College graduate, earning his B.S. in Biology and Chemistry and he earned his Master’s Degree in Teaching from Wayne State University. Robert joined Sylvan Learning of Troy in the fall of 2013 and, when he's not tutoring at Sylvan in our reading, writing or study skills programs, he is a guest teacher and full-time father of two children (one of whom attends Sylvan)!
Besides their children (ages 2 and 10), Robert and his wife also have a black lab named “Kaby” and a cat named “Bulbesaur.” Robert says he enjoys teaching at Sylvan because of the opportunity to interact with such a diverse body of students, and his favorite age group is our middle and high school students.
Little known fact: Robert has lived in many interesting places including Los Angeles, Chicago and Phoenix.
