Our Sylvan trained and certified tutors are dedicated to your child’s success. Working together with you, we will:

- Develop a personalized learning plan based on your child’s goals

Lynn Hoagland
Executive Director
Lynn Hoagland has been the franchise owner for the Troy and Utica, Michigan, Sylvan Learning Centers since 1985. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Michigan State University and a Master’s Degree with a major emphasis in reading from Oakland University. Lynn has over 15 years of classroom teaching experience in the Pontiac and Rochester school systems. She has three daughters, two sons-in-law and five beautiful grandchildren. When Lynn isn't working, she's traveling between Michigan, Colorado and California to visit her family. The true king of her household is Lynn's Bishon, "Duncan".
John Hug
Center Director
John joined Sylvan in September, 2011. He holds a Bachelor of Education degree from Ferris State University. John has worked with families for over 15 years in a variety of educational and recreation programs including Director of enrichment class, sports, fitness and summer camps. When not at Sylvan, John enjoys spending time with friends, playing hockey and backpacking.
Jenny Aiello
Director of Education
Jenny is a graduate of Oakland University. She holds a Bachelor's degree with certification in language arts grades kindergarten through eight. Jenny has been with Sylvan since 2005. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends, cooking, and watching movies.
Alicia Cools-Bas
Director of Education
Alicia has been with Sylvan Learning Center since 1994. She recently transferred from the Troy Sylvan and had worked for the Grosse Pointe location as well. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Wayne State specializing in Early Childhood Education and Social Studies. Alicia lives with her husband, Brian, their daughter Emilia, their dog Chanel, and their cat Mason. She loves working at Sylvan because of the difference we make in each child's education everyday!
Renee Porter
Lead Teacher
Renee joined Sylvan in December 2003. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Oakland University. She is certified in math and science for grades 6-8. She lives with her husband, Jeff, their three sons, Dylan, Nathan and Logan and their dog, Nico. Renee loves spending time with her family and friends and also enjoys the outdoors.
Felicia Wirgau
Lead Teacher
Felicia joined Sylvan in 2010. She has a Bachlors in Music from Wayne State University. She received her Masters of Arts from Central Michigan University in 2004. Felicia has taught Instrumental Music and Language Arts in several area schools over the last couple years. She also taught in Nevada, but her heart belongs in Michigan! Felicia enjoys listening to music, photography and traveling.

In addition to our strong administrative staff, we have between 10-15 part-time instructors, teaching assistants and program managers. We hire certified teachers who are dedicated to helping children develop academic skills and strong self esteem so they are successful in their classrooms.
