News

Sylvan's West Bloomfield tutors teach skills that last a lifetime. We help students learn how to become self-motivated and achieve independence; above all else, we enable them to approach school — and life — with confidence.

We also maintain Sylvan tutoring special offers and seasonal promotions that make getting your child on the road to success easier.

Director of Education

It gives me great pleasure to announce that Marissa Forbes has been officially appointed as the Director of Education at our center. Marissa is a graduate of Wayne State University with an elementary education certification in Integrated Science. Marissa taught in the Southfield School District and subbed for 2 years in several districts around Metro Detroit.

Marissa’s responsibilities include testing students, writing lesson plans, holding parent conferences, school visits, training teachers, and counseling students. We feel fortunate and pleased to have Marissa on our administrative staff and invite you to join us in warmly welcoming her.

Progress! Progress! Progress!

As always, keeping up with student progress is number one. We would like to meet with every family once a month to discuss student progress. If it seems like it has been awhile since your last conference with a Director at the West Bloomfield Sylvan Learning Center, it probably has! Please call and schedule a meeting today!

It is also very important that our Reading and Math students take progress tests every 36 hours of instruction. Please check in with a Director if you think it may be time for your child to take his or her Progress Test.

Math tips

SLC offers tips and ideas to help your children have fun and become successful at solving math problems:
-------------------------------------------------------- *Play popular board games that require basic math skills. For example: Chutes and Ladders®, RackO®, "24", Yahtzee®, TriOminos®, Dominoes, and Connect Four®.

*Work with your child to solve math problems using multiple methods.

*Provide pictorial examples of math concepts. Draw or collect pictures of animals, objects, or people to show add., sub., mult., div., and fractions.

*If your child receives an allowance, use it to formulate mathematics problems and teach them about saving.

*Allow your child to plan the next family trip. Help him compute miles, cost of gas, expenses for food, hotel and entertainment.

*Encourage your child to do math aloud and to explain the series of steps used to solve the problem.

*Assemble puzzles with your child. Puzzles help children learn spatial and visual organization.

*A deck of cards can be a valuable math tool. Card games begin to teach the lesson of probability and reinforce addition/ subtraction memorization.

*Dice are helpful for younger children to practice number facts to six. If they are stumped, they can count the dots to find the sum.
*Relate math to your child's favorite sport. Keeping score is a math exercise!
*Play other car games like "guess my number." This will reinforce logic skills with children of all ages.

*Use Sylvan Learning Center's online Math Activity Book. Log on to tutoring.sylvanlearning.com/parent_learning_resources.cfm and download or print math writing topics, trivia, questions and puzzles.

Book Adventure!

Proctored Tests

Sylvan is an official test proctoring center. Contact your school and have them send us your test. Then, arrange a time with us to take the test at our center. We will mail the test out for you that same day. See your school for supplies you must bring, but all students are required to bring in identification. We charge $50 to proctor your test. Call us at 248-737-2880 for more information. Thank you.

Take the WORK out of your child's homework!

Many people don't realize that not only do Sylvan Learning Centers NOT assign homework; we actually ASSIST students with their homework from school! Besides coming here to fill in those missing skill gaps, students find help and support with work from school that they find difficult. A definite advantage over facing the homework wars at home!
