Meet the Tutors
Our Sylvan trained and certified tutors are dedicated to your child’s success. Working together with you, we will:

Joanne Woolf
Executive Director
B.S. Elementary Education, Minor is Sociology, M.A. Education, Concentration in Educational Leadership
Joanne has worked in education for the past 32 years. She has worked as a classroom teacher, private tutor, and substitute teacher before joining Sylvan Learning Center Inc. where she has worked for the past ten years. She has worked as an Instructor, Director of Education, and Center Director. As
Center Director Joanne oversees all facets of the learning center's operations. First, and foremost she is
responsible for holding the center to the highest standards in the delivery of its educational programs. She works with Sylvan teachers to help students achieve their educational goals, maintains detailed records of students progress, and works in close collaboration with parents, teachers, and other school personnel to ensure each student's success.
Ryan Raab
Certified Instructor
Ryan graduated from the University of Michigan- Flint with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. Ryan graduated from Oxford High School in 1990 and currently lives in Oxford with his wife and three children. He has worked at the Sylvan Learning Center in Oxford for five years.
Deborah Vander Maas
Certified Instructor
Debbie graduated from Calvin College in 1997 with a Secondary Education Degree in English and History. In 2002 she earned her Master's Degree in Library Science from the University of Michigan. Since 2002 she has worked at Scripps Middle School as a Media Specialist. She has been woorking for the Sylvan Learning Center in Oxford since 2004. She enjoys reading, cross stitching, and traveling.
Matthew Hostetler
Certified Instructor
Matt graduated from Oakland University with a Secondary Degree in English and History. He is currently studying Library Science at Wayne State University. Matt enjoys all studies and considers himself a "Renaissance Man" His hobbies include reading, fencing, Boy Scouts, and computers.
Janet Lewis
Certified Instructor
Janet attended Western Michigan University for her Bachelor's Degree and Oakland University for her Master's plus 30 degree in reading. She taught grades K-6 for 33 years in the Pontiac School District and retired in 2005. She began working at the Sylvan Learning Center in Oxford in March of 2007. She has two children and one granddaughter. She loves to vacation in Florida during the winter.
Janet Scheltema
Instructor
Janet received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education with a Minor in Math. She received her Master's Degree in Education as a Reading Specialist. Janet has worked in education for 21 years. She has taught chlidren in elementary and middle schools as well as adults for GED prep and Sign English before joining Sylvan Learning Center Inc. She has worked for Sylvan for the past 15 years. She has worked as an instructor, Director of Education, and Center Director. Currently Janet teaches all subjects at the Sylvan Learning Center in Oxford as well as being a full time classroom teacher.
Angela Renwick
Director of Education
Angela has been dedicated to the education field for the past eight years. She has had experience
as a classroom teacher and substitute teacher. She worked at the Sylvan Learning Center in Holly for three years . She has worked as an Instructor and Director of Education. As Director of Education, Angela oversees all aspects of the center's educational operations. Her responsibilities include; continual training of Sylvan teachers, maintenance of student's educational programs, as well as ensuring consistency and quality in the testing and instructional environments. She also works in close collaboration with student's parents and classroom teachers to ensure each student's success.
