In the Community

At Sylvan, we enjoy playing an active role in our community and want to share our educational expertise with you. Contact us today to find out how we’re working with other local businesses, community groups and schools to promote the importance of learning and education!

School Visits

School visits are central to our mission at Sylvan. Keith and Audra regularly visit with community leaders, service providers, area administrators, guidance counselors and teachers to discuss their needs and how we can assist them in their efforts to educate their students. Also, upon consent from a parent, Carol Hofman, our Director of Education, will correspond with their child's teacher(s) as we become part of the team that is educating their child. School communication is critical to every student's success at Sylvan.

Lutheran Social Services School-Based Mentor Program

We believe in the value of mentoring our youth in our community. Therefore, our Marketing Director, Audra Staebell, mentors a student in the LSS school-based mentoring program at Memorial Middle School. Every Thursday during lunchtime, Audra and her mentee talk and laugh, sharing their thoughts, experiences and life's ups and downs. "We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give." - Winston Churchill

United Way BackPack Program

Sylvan is proud to volunteer our time and efforts to the Sioux Empire United Way's BackPack Program. The BackPack program provides at-risk children with nutritious, easy-to-prepare foods for the weekends. The food is packaged and distributed in bags that children can easily fit into their backpacks and carry home.

•Started in 2007 with 100 backpacks to both Hawthorne Elementary and Axtell Park Middle Schools.
•Currently more than 2,700 food packages are provided at 31 public schools, two private schools and 4 other agencies.
•Feeding South Dakota purchases the food at low-cost. Volunteers pack all food packages on Wednesdays. Feeding South Dakota staff delivers the packages to schools on Thursdays. School staff distribute to students on Fridays.
•Each package costs $3.75/week or $135 for a year per child.
•Packages may include: cereal, oatmeal, juice, fresh fruit, a protein, granola bars, fruit cups, raisins, and nuts.

Family Connection

We are excited to contribute our time and talents to Family Connection in Sioux Falls. Our Marketing Director, Audra Staebell, as been asked to be on the Board of this wonderful organization for 2012 - 2014.
Since Mother's Day weekend 1996, Family Connection continues to serve and support individuals and families with loved ones in prison. They began with a hospitality house on the corner of Minnesota Avenue and 7th Street. Over the years, they’ve grown, adding a second hospitality house. They've also added a new program called Children’s Connection, which provides support for children with a close family member in prison.

Today they serve hundreds of people each year in their houses, making it possible for them to visit family members who are incarcerated. Guests are not charged, but they do ask for a $5 donation if possible. And, this year Children’s Connection worked with nearly 150 children. For these children, they offer group counseling sessions during their lunch periods. This program has grown tremendously – the goal is to provide support for these children in the hope of lowering the rate of cyclic familial incarceration. But over 800 children in the area have a loved one and prison, so there’s still a long way to grow.

They invite you to join Family Connection and Children’s Connection through volunteering or making a donation. Thank you for your support!
