Success Stories

Commitment

"I love how the staff is so inviting for the kids. They are always happy to see the kids and notice if they got new shoes or new haircuts. The kids don't fight me to go to Sylvan at all, they enjoy it - my 13yr old will never admit that, but he never complains. We drive 3 hours to Sylvan and 3 hours back home it’s a commitment on my part and the kids. I would do anything for their education and this is DEFINENTLY a step in the right direction. It has helped them so much in school. The staff talks to the kids’ teachers and keeps the lines of communications open with me as a parent - which is a huge asset!

Anyone with kids having trouble in school, no matter how small the problem I would recommend to them to bring their kids to Sylvan. Education is something that can't be taken away. They will take it with them EVERYWHERE they go in life.

Thank You Sylvan for the helping my children!!"

Best Money We've Ever Spent

"Our son Josh attended Sylvan in 2009-10 for about 200 hours in reading and math. He has been on the honor roll ever since and we just got the results of his Dakota Step test back and he is above proficient in both math and reading. He has an A in math this year and loves it. Sylvan was the best money we've ever spent and we have never been sorry for a minute that we spent it!"

- Michelle & Dave Robinson

Sincere Thanks

"I just wanted to take time to extend our sincere thanks for the education and encouragement you provided to our daughter, Andrea, during her elementary and high school education. She is a freshman at Dakota State University this year and doing great academically and socially. We really can't say thanks enough for all you did to help her achieve this success. She received three different scholarships for her freshman year and that certainly speaks to all that you helped her accomplish during her time at Sylvan.

Thank you again and for your dedication, encouragement and great work. You were always wonderful to work with and made learning a positive experience for Andrea. I would recommend your program to anyone and everyone!"

- Becky McManus

Achieving Goals

"I enjoy the friendly, caring staff and have seen progress as my child has continued on the tutoring with Sylvan. I am very pleased and will be sad when we are done :) but I also know that my child will have achieved the goals we set together in her reading program."

- Teresa Evans

Outstanding Education Direction

"I think Carol Hofman is an outstanding Education Director. She will make sure she finds why a child is having a problem and get to the bottom of their difficulty in a short period of time and then adjusts the program as each child moves through their program. Meghan currently has a 90.5% average in fourth grade math (in their fourth week of class). She has never made a 4 or A in math since Kindergarten. She has had 4 tests and made 3 A's and 1 C-. I really believe Carol not only helped Meghan with her problem areas but she was quite ready for school this year."

- Stan Witte

Genuine Interest

"There is so much we like including the wonderful teachers and staff who are genuinely interested in helping all that attend grow, increase their self esteem and work towards successful achievements. The communication and updates of progress has helped keep us up-to-date with how our child is doing and the specific areas that may still need more work."

- Dan and Barb Hartmann

Perseverance Pays Off - Literally

"Our son Jonathan took the ACT Prep course at Sylvan to obtain a great score on the ACT. Though his score did improve, he said it was the test-taking and studying strategies that he learned during the course that he applied toward his other subjects that improved his GPA so he was able to become eligible for $20,000 in scholarship moneys for college! He credits the course with helping him become a much more efficient and effective student. His hard work and persistance paid off. Thank you Sylvan!"

- Susan & Mark Schmit

Sylvan Makes Kids Feel Good About Themselves

"Sylvan is the best program to help children with learning problems. It makes kids feel welcome, smart, and worthy. I would recommend it to any parent who wants to help their child become all they desire to be. It's the best investment we made with our money with the largest return. Thanks to you all."

- Tracy Nordquist

Communication

"English and Math subjects taught excellent. Administrators Carol and Audra are excellent communicators with us"

- Jaya and Madhu Potla

Feeling Special

"My son Caliber attended Sylvan about 3 1/2 years ago. When he started he had terrible self-esteem due to struggling in school and teasing from peers. Sylvan worked with him and he improved 3 grade levels. He's now a Sophomore and has made the "B" honor roll. We attribute his success to Sylvan! Caliber tells people he couldn't learn anything until he came to Sylvan. He loves animals and takes care of his own on our farm. Thank you for a great education for Caliber and for making him feel like he was somebody special. There is no one quite like Sylvan!"

- Dena Longbrake

Transformation

"Dalton's performance and confidence flourished...he became a reader."

- Dodie Wageris

Thank You!

"I have nothing but excellent things to say about Sioux Falls Sylvan Learning. The people I worked with were always respectful, pleasant and helpful.
My granddaughter participated in the program for 16 hours per week for the entire summer. Not once did she complain about having to go the center. She loved the teachers and staff. Most of all, she has learned the necessary skills that will enable her to perform at her grade level with confidence. Sylvan has given her another chance at life to do whatever she chooses to do in the future!
Thank you so much Sylvan! We couldn't have done it without you."

- Brenda Struck

Pin Pointing Needs

"I like how Sylvan was able to pin point Toria's problem areas and then address them."

- Cathy Andre

Kurt Rocks

"Our son, Max, is an 18 year old who took the Advanced Reading Skills (ARS) course to improve the Reading section of his ACT and to enhance his reading skills for college coursework. He was thoroughly impressed by what he learned in such a short period. His instructor was Kurt. As he says, "Kurt rocks"."

- Nancy Hanson

Magic

"The staff seemed to be magical with my son's attitude - he could arrive in the worst mood and always came out in an awesome mood!"

- Lisa Hansen

Sylvan is the BEST!

"The program is the BEST that we have around here. I wish the program was located in Brookings, SD too. Libby loved it and I did too! She went from S- to an S+ in math!"

- Vicky Thompson

Jordan

"Sylvan is wonderful. My son gained confidence and his attitude towards school has changed 100%. When we started Sylvan, his grades were D's and F's. When we completed 144 hours, his grades were A's, B's and C's. Jordan loved Sylvan and never complained. Sylvan is a wonderful program, and Kristen was awesome to work with. Thanks so much, Sylvan!!!"

- Mrs. D.

Reading is Not a Constant Struggle Anymore

"Tanner really enjoyed his Sylvan experience. He always looked forward to going and never complained. He came out with a smile on his face every time! Most importantly, he has a better attitude when it comes to reading. It's not a constant fight/struggle anymore like it used to be. Thanks to everyone who worked with him!"

- -MaryJo & Chris Burkman

Math is just easier

"I now have confidence and faith that I can do math. It helps me a lot with school work, especially as the assignments start to get harder and harder. I got A's on my last two quizzes, and one of them was 100%, it's just easier now and I get it."

- Rachel Herum, former Algebra student

Results

"On a scale of 1 - 10 where 10 is extremely likely and 1 is not at all likely, how likely is it that you would recommend the Sioux Falls Sylvan to a friend or colleague?

10. We are very pleased with the program - excellent results."

- Paula Clemens - mom of a High School Junior Algebra II student

Ready To Start 5th Grade With Confidence

"We thank everyone involved that helped Shannon during her time at Sylvan. She was excited to come and learn and also looked forward to spending her tokens at the the store. We feel she is ready to start 5th grade with confidence. Thank you!"

- Lois Bierschbach

Thrilled With Results

"This is the second time we've enrolled Erica at Sylvan [first time was for Beginning Reading and second time was for Algebra II]. We've been thrilled with the results both times! She'll be back for the ACT Prep!"

- Nancy Ode

Realizing Full Potential

"We are so happy with the results Bryson had with Sylvan. He made such good progress with all his teachers, who treated him so great and helped him so much. We would have never known his full potential had it not been for Sylvan. Sylvan has helped Bryson get ahead, after being so far behind for too long. Bryson loved to come to Sylvan and he found the help he needed. If it comes to a point that he needs help again, we will enroll him in Sylvan again. Thanks Sylvan and Carol!"

- Lynette and Dave

A Cry for Help

"When I called Sylvan, it was definitely a cry for help. I felt like my situation was at a breaking point. I didn’t know what to do, something needed to be done right away...but I felt overwhelmed, like we had waited too long. I didn't know if we could do this…but I knew something had to be done.
From the beginning, the folks at Sylvan helped me realize I wasn’t alone, and they CAN and DO help. They helped me believe that I would see improvement in a more confident, successful child. Like anything else in life, academic success would require commitment and consistency. They walked me through the process step-by-step and broke things down into a results driven strategized plan to succeed. When I started to think of things in steps, the overwhelming feelings began to subside and I realized that I COULD do this and my child WOULD be successful…I felt relaxed and confident about my child’s future and I hadn’t felt that way in a long time. THANK YOU SYLVAN!"

- A Sioux Falls Sylvan Parent

Sky's the Limit

"Thank you for all that you and the teachers did while my children attended Sylvan. My husband and I not only saw improvement in their academic skills but more importantly in their levels of confidence and self-esteem. They knew they could achieve difficult things as long as they applied themselves. Thanks!"

- Heather & Mike Hiltunen

Leaps and Bounds

"On a scale from 1-10 where 10 is extremely likely and 1 is not at all likely, how likely is it that you would recommend Sylvan to a friend or colleague?" 10. Sarah's confidence level throughout the process just exploded. She went from a 2nd grade level to a 5th grade level in a year."

- DS

High school Success

"Sylvan Learning not only made a huge difference in our daughter's success in high school but is probably also reponsible for the academic scholarship she received for college. Her mother and I actually discouraged her from taking an accelerated math course. But she wanted to take the course anyway, because she felt it would be good college preparation. Sure enough, she began to fall behind and stopped doing her homework simply because the problems were too difficult. She tried making appointments with the teacher, but the teacher simply didn't have the kind of time our daughter needed to overcome her confusion. That's when we turned to Sylvan for help. After just a few hour-long sessions with a Sylvan tutor, our daughter had caught up with her peers and was back on track in math. C's and D's on homework turned to A's and B's. Not only did she understand what she was doing, but she was able to help other students in the class who were having trouble with the material. The Sylvan tutor explained the math concepts she was struggling with, but also offered tips on study skills and test preparation that will be invaluable in the years ahead. The money we spent at Sylvan was one of the best investments in our child's education we've made so far.

The Music of Words Part I

"Our journey began in September of 1999 when Connor entered kindergarten. He couldn't rhyme and no matter how often we drilled him on letter sounds, he never quite got the hang of it. In first grade, he mixed up "was" and "saw" and "for" and "from." The Title One reading program helped, but by second grade, he would look at the first letter of a word and guess.
In 2004, I pushed the issue and asked for an assessment. I was told that Connor would not qualify for assistance because his grades hovered around a B- average. The counselor said I should be proud of how well Connor was coping.
What the school could not see was the pain of Connor's coping. Each night, Connor and I would sit at the counter and take turns reading every other page of his homework. He would complete workbooks and worksheets over the next three hours. I would then edit his homework, have him correct his mistakes. He would rewrite his work, pausing to wipe tears off his papers.
His only solace came from music. Within three months of starting band, he completed the first book and performed a solo in front of hundreds of people. For the first time in his life, black marks on a sheet of paper made sense.
In February of 2005, Connor struggled to finish a challenging book for his English class. Each page took a painful twenty minutes to complete. Our tears mixed on the pages until the words were unreadable.
The next day I called Sylvan. Several weeks later, we had Connor tested. His vocabulary fell at the fourth grade, ninth month level. His reading rate was at mid- third grade level.
We enrolled him in the Sioux Falls Sylvan Learning Center, where he spent the next five and a half months attending their reading program. We drove to Sioux Falls twice each week, logging in as much car time as Sylvan time."

The Music of Words Part II

"After the first thirty-six hours of instruction, Connor's vocabulary had increased 2.8 grade equivalents, while his overall achievement increased two full grade levels. Reading rate still hovered significantly lower than grade level. Computer time was implemented into his program to increase speed.
As part of Sylvan's program, Connor earned tokens, which could then be used to purchase prizes. Connor's favorite prize quickly became books.
By the end of summer, Connor had put in over 100 hours at Sylvan. His reading rate had increased from a snail's pace to a hippo's pace, which according to Connor can be pretty fast whn motivated. I bawled in the director's office the day I told her Connor would not be coming back. We would keep an eye on him and bring him back if he started to struggle again.
In sixth grade, with no homework help from me, Connor made the A honor roll, read all 311 pages of White Fang and was Student of the Month. In April, 2006, he entered an essay contest regarding an intergenerational relationship. Connor poured his heart and soul into it. A letter arrived saying that he had won the contest and the essay would be published in the newspaper.
That week, he read his essay in front of the entire sixth grade and again for the local radio station. "Papa Dave is as tall as a tree and his eyes are like a rushing river. He wears cowboy boots and has gray hair that is sometimes filled with sawdust from working in his shop." The words rolled off his tongue fluently, without a stutter, and sounded sweeter than any song."

Gian Andreone

"We first came to Sylvan when Gian was in elementary school. He was struggling some with reading and language skills. Sylvan provided him the support to master those subjects and made school a much "happier" place to be! When he "hit a wall" in fourth grade with fractions, Sylvan helped him master those as well. In ninth grade, my son Gian decided that he wanted to include more math classes in his high school education. By taking Geometry for credit, Gian now has the option to take higher level math classes in preparation for college. At the Sioux Falls Sylvan, he has mastered Geometry with enthusiasm. Sylvan has given him the confidence he needs to succeed in his school math courses."

- Peter and Berit Andreone

Chelsea

"Chelsea enjoyed her time at Sylvan and was excited about attending her classes. We are proud of the progress she made, and she is proud of herself. The staff is friendly and helpful, and we would recommend your facility to anyone."

- Lisa and Mike

Madison Ungacta

"Sylvan exceeded my expectations, and now we are reaping the benefits. The program designed for Madison was tailored to meet her needs and kept her challenged. The teachers made learning fun and exciting. Thank you for all the support you gave to Madison and our family!"

- Maliisa Ungacta, formerly of Mitchell, SD

Brandon

"Thank you so much!!! I can't put into words how I feel. All I know is that I am so proud of Brandon and so very happy with everyone at Sylvan."

- Michele Stensland
