Sylvan's tutors teach skills that last a lifetime. We help students learn how to become self-motivated and achieve independence; above all else, we enable them to approach school — and life — with confidence.
We also maintain Sylvan tutoring special offers and seasonal promotions that make getting your child on the road to success easier.
Background:
We are a nationwide tutoring company with neighborhood educational centers offering a wide choice of research-based educational programs and tutoring options for students Pre-K through College (and even some adult courses). Sylvan Learning Center in Southlake is an accredited supplemental educational facility which helps students catch up, keep up, or get ahead.
Program Options:
A Sylvan Family has two options: Homework Help, which is offered in-Center, and/or a customized RX program, which is offered in-Center or live- Online. Homework help includes us contacting your student’s teacher to find out any upcoming tasks and to obtain old tests, study guides, etc. and then having your child bring anything/everything related to the Reading/Math/History/Chemistry/Spanish/
etc. to us to do with him/her. Our Prescriptive program at Sylvan addresses the specific skill gaps in a student’s education. Whether for a student who wants to be challenged and to jump ahead or for a student who is struggling—we identify, through a diagnostic testing battery, a personalized starting point. With either program choice, we incorporate methods for behavioral and motivational changes as well as for the development of organizational and study strategies.
Schedule and Tutoring Hours:
We do NOT require a contract. All days/hours for tutoring are chosen by your family (we provide recommendations) and confirmed with our director. All instruction is designed to complement and support regular school activities and takes place after school hours, so it does not interfere with class attendance. Our Southlake location, as you see on the website, is open seven days a week for tutoring.
Outside Work?
We DO NOT give homework; everything is done with our certified tutors.
Our Goal and How Sylvan Works:
Our goal is to never "drag out a program"; rather, it is to get students through their programs, so that each student not only LEARNS the material, but more importantly RETAINS it and can therefore APPLY it to school. Our job is that your student gains the skills needed to be a confident learner! In our catch up and keep up Prescriptive program, we work from the bottom up to fill in any "gaps—making sure that the student gets enough repetition and review to ensure skill mastery. Although we can do 1:1 instruction upon your request, oftentimes that lends itself to the student being dependent on the tutor, and our goal is to fix the challenges at hand so a continuous tutor isn’t always needed. Our delivery of instruction in a 2:1 or 3:1 format allows each student to have his/her own personal and individualized curriculum delivered in a guided practice format. While one student is being taught a skill, the other students are doing 3 or 4 problems to demonstrate they understand what has been recently taught (repetition and review). That "back-and-forth" guided/independent practice allows a student to gain mastery and build confidence and independence! During the school year, we have a running portfolio for each student and will GLADLY share that information with your student’s classroom teachers upon your request. Also, we schedule family conferences with you at least once per month to create a triangle of communication between the family, Sylvan, and school.
Cost:
We'll work very hard with you to find a financial and scheduling plan that works for you to meet the needs of your family. The first step is to find out what those needs are. Email us for cost information, or call and speak to a director! We do not have contracts, and can help you get the help your student needs and assist you with fitting it into your budget.
Bottom line is that we truly like to assess students prior to coming to Sylvan, though it's not a requirement. Or, perhaps you may want to first visit our Center and have a tour and a free consultation to see which of the above options would best fit the needs of your student…. We are here to serve you, and a face to face consultation allows you to meet us, see the center, and for us to get to know you and to help you select the best option for your student.
1. Let your child see you reading for pleasure.
2. Read to your child in your primary language. Listening skills come before reading skills.
3. Listen to your child read to you and or to relatives.
4. Reward your child for reading using praise, new books, a success chart, etc.
5. Develop your child's experiential background. This will allow her to relate reading activities to life!
6. Build vocabulary activities through games and practice! Try word bingo or a word game together!
7. Use BookAdventure.com to help build reading comprehension skills.
8. Take your child to the library regularly.
9. Let your child get excited about books of his/her choice!
10. Turn off the TV and READ. Read the books that correspond to upcoming Movie Blockbuster hits!
Speed Reading is VITAL to doing well on the critical reading portion of the SAT college-entrance exams! Qualified students 6th grade and above (even adults) may take this class. CALL THE CENTER FOR the Center's SPRING AND SUMMER 2010 dates. Also, call for approval regarding on-site (*your choice, upon Sylvan approval) for Sylvan Advanced Reading (aka SPEED READING) seminars.

BRINGING UP BOYS
Don't judge these books by their titles! Dr. Peters' books are designed to help parents motivate their kids with ways that the students will respond to (like freedom incentives). Dr. Peters teaches parents how to communicate effectively with children of any age. Dr. Dobson's book gives solid advice of how to bring up boys in a difficult society and teach them to become strong, successful men! These are certainly "Must Read" books on my list!
