Success Stories

SAT Success

"Before I came to Sylvan I scored a 1690 on my SAT's. After working through their SAT Prep course, my scores improved by 270 points! Now, my highest SAT score is a 1960. I improved by 150 points in the math section and 120 points in the verbal section. Now, I am ranked in the 85-90 percentile in each of the subject areas! I was also able to improve my essay by two points! Thanks, Sylvan!"

A Mother's Heart

"I, Jodi, one of the Directors at Southlake Sylvan, was so thrilled to read this email from one of our Sylvan mom's today. It brings tears to my eyes as I know so many mom's (and their family) want so desperately to see the sparkle in their child's eye when he "gets it" and the "lightbulb comes on". What a blessing, Sylvan Families, you are to MY heart--and what an HONOR it is to serve You. Read on....
"Today is another wonderful day. His sentences are so good along with his speaking. He is growing more and more inquisitive about things and it is so fun! Yes, this has been the day I've dreamed of for years and cannot wait to see what our future journey has in store for us. I have always known how smart (my son) is and as he can verbalize, ask questions, read and communicate the whole world will be able to see the beautiful little soul he is too! Thank you for your partnership! We have been so very blessed to have such wonderful doctors and you, the Team, and the teachers up at Sylvan. We just cannot thank you enough! This is truly an amazing and Godly journey that we are on. His perfect plan as always!"

Struggling for Success: A TAKS Testimony

"I owe Sylvan Learning Center my life. They literally changed me from a person who used to struggle in math to someone who enjoys it.

Since I was in Middle School, I was never able to pass the math TAKS test. When I got to High School, I was put into a remedial TAKS class just to pass the test (and even those didn't help me). I was put on ADD meds. No matter what my parents, doctor, or I did-I couldn't pass the test. My 11th grade year, my parents decided to send me to Sylvan. Even though I didn't want to go because I felt like a loser, I decided it was something I had to do. My Sylvan tutor helped me learn math-and even helped with my math homework. I started to get 90s, and I even earned tokens at Sylvan. (The tokens would add up so that I could get a prize, and it may sound childish but it's what inspired me to do my best and work hard.)

In January I met the standards I was supposed to meet, and stopped going to Sylvan. After not going to Sylvan anymore, my grades continued to go up and I did well in my class. Come April, it was time for the math TAKS. I was really nervous when I sat down at my desk. My hands were shaking and my face was sweating. Next thing I know, my teacher said, "Students-please unseal your test booklet." Right when it was time for me to succeed, I used all my strategies I learned at Sylvan and put my whole heart into it. When the test was over, I walked out of the classroom and felt confident (and powerful!). A couple of weeks passed, and I finally got the results back. Looking at that paper my eyes went straight to the math section. There it was-the words printed in blank ink: I PASSED! That was the happiest day! I had a big smile you could see a mile away. I immediately called my mom and told her the news, and it felt so good to succeed for myself--but also to make my family proud of me.

I owe Sylvan my life. I learned in life and in school if you work hard for what you want it will come easier."

Note from Kamille's parents: "Thank you for all your help and for making a difference in the life of our daughter."

Ethan's Enthusiasm

"Hello Ladies,

I wanted to give you an update on Ethan. He is doing AWESOME in second grade. His reading is at grade level and his comprehension is amazing (according to his teacher). His teacher stated that based on his "robotic" reading style, she was shocked at how high his comprehension is - he scored the highest possible score. He now loves to read and doesn't fight us at all when it's time for his nightly reading. His confidence is 100% better than it was before we started the Sylvan program. I cannot thank you enough for instilling that confidence in him! Greg and I plan on re-enrolling Ethan in the late Spring. We know that with the help he received from Sylvan over the Summer, he was able to start 2nd grade feeling really confident. We want to make sure that each Summer, we keep him on track and establish a regular reading routine - which we were able to do this past Summer with your help.

So thank you Ladies. Sylvan really made a difference.

Homer's Reading Home Run!

"Hey Jodi,

Homer's Reading Assessment scores for the 1st six weeks of school indicate that he is doing great! His teacher said he is at or above grade level in all areas and off the charts in fluency, which is where I was most concerned. Thanks for everything, and we'll see you in the summer!"

Aaron: Spelling Success-Roanoke student

"January 28, 2010

Hi Sylvan Team,

This afternoon, Aaron and I were looking at his grades. He was making 50's and 60's on spelling tests prior to Sylvan. Now he is making all A's! Just wanted to share that and thank all of you.

College Student Thanks Sylvan Southlake....

"Dear Jodi,
First and foremost I want to thank you again for everything that you have done for me. If it wasn't for Sylvan and your help along with your outstanding tutors (Mrs. Eileen and Mrs. Tirzah) I would not be where I am today. You have help me in making my dreams come true. I wanted to let you know that I have decided to commit to the Honor's College here at OSU. I also wanted to let you know that I tell everyone about Sylvan and how much y'all have helped me. You have helped me become more confident in the work and activities that I accomplish. There are some days that I wish I was still in high school so that I can come to Sylvan and be greeted with the warm smile and greetings of what feels like a family.
Please let my Sylvan tutors know that they helped me extremely so much with pre-cal and I was able to apply the skills that she taught me to my college algebra class last semester which I completed with a high A.

So, in short- Sylvan's Speed Reading class not only helped me cut the time it normally takes me to read materials, it also showed me multiple ways to read various types of material. Sylvan's Homework Program helped me get through PreCal. The SAT got me into the college of my choice! Thank you Sylvan!

Sincerely, Kelby G"

Improving My Son's Future....

"Dear Jodi and Denise,

You ladies are wonderful and Sylvan is awesome! It's like magic how quickly you help kids improve, especially my son Ryan who is autistic. We figured Sylvan might be able to help but our hopes have been well exceeded and we're so grateful. Your help is improving his future. You all are so kind we just love you. Thank you, thank you."

Learning CAN be fun!

"Jodi and Denise,

"...After months of school struggles and the accompanying self confidence issues, the faculty at Sylvan offered help and hope. During his very first week at Sylvan, our son's confidence soared. He eagerly anticipated each session, and was able to immediately apply his new skills and knowledge to his work at home and at school. Within the first few weeks at Sylvan, our son's teacher observed a transformation of his demeanor at school: he became engaged in discussions, he sat upright rather than laying his head on his desk, and of couse, his grades improved. In two months time, his spelling grades went from 50's and 60's to A's. Reading became a pleasure rather than a chore. His third, and final, month at Sylvan further bolstered his confidence and gave him the skills necessary to excel in his next year of school.

One of the greatest blessings that resulted from Aaron's three months at Sylvan was that he developed a love of learning. It is obvious that Sylvan not only gives kids the skills to succeed in the present, but gifts them with the ability and the desire to strive for success on their own through a lifetime love of learning. Aaron continues to ask me to give him extra homework like what he worked on at Sylvan.

We look forward to partnering with you in the future if and when challenges arise. May God continue to bless you, your ministry and countless young lives through you."

Best regards,

Kaitlyn's Math Miracle

"Hi Jodi,

My daughter Kaitlyn attended the Southlake Sylvan last summer through
early January. She was working on her math skills for the 5th grade
TAKS test. I just wanted to say thank you to both you and Denise as
well as all of the staff that worked with Kaitlyn. She got her TAKs
score this week, and was commended on her math TAKs. Not only
commended she only missed one question on the whole test. I 100%
believe she could not have done this without your program. She was
convinced she could not do math last summer and even called herself
"stupid" at one point. Now when you ask her what her favorite subject
is she will tell you math. She is completely confident in math and I
cannot thank you enough. We questioned putting her in Sylvan at first,
but it was absolutely worth every penny. I just wanted to let you know
how she did, and to express my appreciation for all you did for her.

Thank you,

Holly K"

TAKS success!

"July 25, 2010

Jodi and Denise
I wanted let you know how Sam and Ryan did with the TAKS test. Sam got a 4 on his writing and we were thrilled. He got 100% on his math and 1 wrong on his reading! He was so happy. Ryan got 1 wrong on his writing and math tests. They both did great. We feel that Sylvan definitely helped and we thank you for that!

Have a wonderful summer.

Kennedy's 1st Grade Success!

"Jodi,

Thank you all so much for all of your timely and precise help with Kennedy. I'm sure you hear frequently how much your program as helped a kiddo improve. Well, here's another story.

Kennedy's self-esteem has improved; his tolerance for trying has improved and frustration with reading has improved. Kennedy can now read "at-level" grade books with more confidence and comprehension. He can tell me what happens and who the characters are. He can read instructions for comprehension and follow them.

Last week, he finished a 315-page workbook; it was his "summer homework." He was SO proud of himself. We put a HUGE certificate on our refrigerator. So, as a reward, he and a few of his friends will get to go to Chuck E. Cheese. Also, he has read more than half of the books his teacher sent home with him for the summer. He's gotten faster and faster.

I have NO DOUBT that Sylvan played a "gi-normous" :-) part in his success. Your staff was very loving and clearly there was a Spiritual grounding that was so important to us as we searched for just the place for our son. There was a tutoring center literally down the street from our house, but yours is the one we chose. Jodi, when I walked into your office the first day and discovered you were a Christian, and you seemed to walk your talk and the words posted around your office, I was sold. Keep it up. People do actually watch! :-)

The staff's warmth was awesome and comforting. The teachers who worked with Kennedy had a definite impact. I don't want to leave anybody out. So, please tell them all Kennedy's family thinks they absolutely rock! :-)

May God continue to bless your ministry through the hearts of children.

Please never stop, K & C"

Our Delight in Daniel...

"Our Son started going to Sylvan during Summer 2010 to improve on his Reading/Comprehension. What an amazing transformation, my son went from being behind when he left Grade 1 to being on Grade 2 level within 12 weeks. We were very impressed with the whole learning process, without the support of Sylvan and their professional attention to detail and making the whole learning experience fun our son would have remained in Grade 1.

Denise & Jodi, the Directors, are so wonderful, if we ever had a question they were always there either in person/email/phone to help us. Our son really enjoys going to Sylvan and the staff have really made him feel at home. A very big thank you to everyone at Sylvan Learning Centre.

Many thanks again and take care

Regards

A Grandmother's Smile...

"When Melvin finished the 3rd grade, he was a very discouraged little boy because he had failed the Math TAKS and also failed it in summer school. I had been telling the teachers ever since 1st grade that he just wasn't getting it, but they just brushed off what I was saying. In desperation, I called Sylvan and it was the best decision I ever made. When tested, it was shown that he was lacking in many levels of his learning skills. He started Sylvan and started the 4th grade with much more confidence and his grades improved dramatically. It still is not easy for him, but he is so much farther along than he was. Sylvan has made a difference in his life.

VALUE, VALUE, VALUE

"I have been very happy that the boys have retained the same teachers throughout the summer. It certainly adds valuable time to the learning experience when you have an established relationship and truly know students best learning methods.

I also love the attention to detail given by ALL staff. I feel that we have a great team effort between educators, parents and students( 2 sons, 1 grandson)

Most of all..... All 3 boys really LIKE going and SEE the benefits!!!..

Tried other things.... Sylvan WORKS!

"I love the individual attention and frankness given by Jodi. I can count on her for her honest assessment of the situation and possible solutions. She is easy to work with and looks to results.

Additionally, Hilary has been very friendly and professional to work with. If she doesn't have an answer she calls back promptly when she finds it out.
I have done business with Kumon and see that Sylvan is far ahead regarding my needs."

EXCITED and CONFIDENT!!!!

"Our son is happy when he "Gets to go to Sylvan" so that is great feeling for us too. He is actually excited to learn and his confidence is coming back. I am getting teary eyed writing this because it is so tough to see your child struggle and get teased and lose his confidence. The staff at Sylvan really care about our son and they have taken the time to figure out how he learns best and what keeps his attention and makes learning fun for him. His confidence is coming back now and a large part of that is the attention and kindness that he receives from the Sylvan staff. They reward him and help him see the positive things about reading, writing and math (those are the focus for him currently). They do not belittle him or make him feel like he can't learn something. He did go to a few weeks of summer school through the public school system per the public school's request, but it was more of the same negativity and lack of learning. He actually came home crying because he had overheard people making fun of the dumb kids who have to go to summer school. He is only 6 and that sort of environment does not foster a good feeling about education in a child. I had to get him back to Sylvan to undo what the Public Summer School had done. The Sylvan Center in Southlake was highly recommended to me by many friends, family and neighbors, and I will be now be highly recommending them as well! Learning Environment is good...

"We liked the small 1 teacher to 3 students, learning environment that our child experienced at Sylvan. Each instructor and staff member treated our child like she was special and they were very encouraging with regard to her progress. They also expressed interest in our child as a whole person; inquiring about everyday things that were going on in her life and were important to her. She still talks about wanting to go pop in just to say hi to her Sylvan teachers. She now boasts an "A" average and her confidence level has skyrocketed! We had a wonderful experience.

Anxiety?

"There is so much anxiety associated with your child's educational development. What you hope for is the sustained progression without issue, or slowdown. In reality, everyone needs help from time to time and Sylvan has allowed our child to bridge his learning gap, getting back to where he needed to be. The professional manner in which the staff assessed our child's current state left us comfortable with what we were facing. Moving towards building a plan of progression helped us understand the pace by which we could expect our child to move at. The results and confidence gained by our child at the end of the effort left us all with a sense if satisfaction and gratification to all of the members of the Sylvan staff.
