1:1 tutoring sounds like the ideal situation. The belief is that because a student does not have to "share" the tutor and therefore gets through activities at a faster pace and all the activities are directed to that student's needs the student progresses faster.
In reality this does not happen.
1:1 tutoring means that, unless the tutor leaves the student work area, the tutor is constantly saying things like: "you're on the right track," "good job," "just change this," "remember...we reviewed..." and the comments continue. Students rely on these comments and become afraid to write their thoughts on paper unless reinforced by a seeming few words of encouragement.
Students need to work out problems, answer questions, complete statements, write sentences and paragraphs on their own to gain confidence in a subject area and build confidence in themselves. Students must believe in themselves and in their ability to work alone to have the courage to complete tests accurately.
At Sylvan, your student's individualized and personalized program is designed so that the initial instruction, guided practice (practicing what has been taught with the instructor's 1:1 attention) and the independent practice (students completing work without instructor assistance) all occur in such a way that the student is confident they can do the work on their own. But, because every student is different, if your student will benefit from 2:1 or 1:1 for any reading, Sylvan will accomodate!
Confident students pass tests successfully!
