We saw almost immediate results.
To the staff at Sylvan Learning Center in Tualatin: Kids understand how they measure up to their classmates. Our son was in first grade and falling significantly behind in his reading skills. He was becoming self conscious of his below average reading and this was infecting his self esteem in most other areas of his life. Once you child loses their self esteem, they lose their eagerness to learn and try new things resulting in everything becoming difficult. As a parent, low self esteem painful to observe in your child. Karla and I were concerned that it's one thing to struggle with your first grade reading homework, but it's another thing to lose your self esteem. While watching him fall further behind, we knew we had to do something. We had heard good things about Sylvan Learning Centers and we looked into it. After meeting the people and going through the initial screening process, we knew they could help our son.
We saw almost immediate results. He loves his teacher. This spring he will have been attending his learning center for one year. The flexibility in scheduling his time has been great: more hours/week during the summer and less hours/week during the school year. The testing that Sylvan does to benchmark and monitor progress is invaluable and more relevant than what we receive from his school, but the visible impact Sylvan has created is in his self esteem. He is on pace with his classmates, he reads over 100 words/minute now, he enjoys reading and has regained his confidence in trying new things in all aspects of his life. Another invaluable lesson our son learned through his work at Sylvan was to set a goal, work toward your goal, and achieve it. There is no better lesson in life.
Thank you Sylvan.
