"Nathan’s confidence in his ability to do his school work has increased significantly and his grades have improved. We appreciate Sylvan being flexible to Nathan’s sports schedule and that is what really has allowed us to make it work. We really appreciate the regular testing and feedback sessions we have on his progress."

- Lori R.

"We have been very happy with everyone at Sylvan. Bryan has done a great job at keeping us informed on our son's progress and always makes himself available for any questions or concerns. My son has had the opportunity to work with Jean, she is a wonderful teacher, he loves working with her. Jean and everyone at the center have helped build our son's confidence and that in turn has helped with his anxiety. I would and have recommended Sylvan to many people. I cannot say enough great things about Sylvan, but my son sums it up best, he told me that of all the activities he is in, he likes tutoring the best."

- Jessica B.

"Our agency works with single mothers, ages 18 and up. Many of these women have deficit reading and math skills and are performing at elementary school levels. However, Ann Marie and Brian (Beavercreek) office, treats each of our clients with dignity and respect. Meeting them where they are, and giving unconditional acceptance helps the women to feel validated and unashamed in facing their deficiencies. We are very grateful for their assistance and support."

- Gwen B.

"Our experience with Sylvan was great! Brian and Ann-Marie were fantastic with my son and helped me so much any time I had questions. Enrolling our child at Sylvan was the best thing we could have done for him and for us and we will forever be grateful for the wonderful people at Sylvan and the great job they did!"

"“Sylvan provides a positive learning experience for my daughter. She looks forward to attending her classes. She is beginning to build her skills and her confidence.”"

- ----Tiffany S.

"Sylvan has given my daughter the one on one instruction she needed to be confident in the classroom. Her grades have improved, and she is more excited about the whole learning process. She has definitely blossomed in the months she has gone to Sylvan."

- ----Rachael M.

"When I first came here, I was at the bottom level of my confidence. I had just flunked out of the dental hygiene program and I knew I needed help. Where could I go to get help with test taking and studying? As I progressed through my tutorial sessions, I was learning a VERY important part of being a better student... how to organize myself. Words cannot express how much Sylvan has helped me. I am back in the dental hygiene program and last quarter my GPA was 3.2."

- ---- Lynn W.

"When Kalie first tested she scored several levels below her current grade level. Her confidence was non existent and she was really down on herself. She really liked Vickie and Jean and all of the other teachers that worked with her. She always looked forward to seeing Bryan because he made her laugh. I am so glad that I picked up the phone and called that day and I am glad Bryan is the one that answered. He was great to work with and he really cared about Kalie. Thank you for having such a great program and making such a difference in my daughters life."

- Lorie A.

"Knowing that my little boy loves to go to sylvan and it's making a difference!"

- Charlotte F.

"Ryan has attended Sylvan for almost ten months. His father and I think he has benefited greatly from Sylvan. I would advise anyone who is experiencing problems with their child's progress or lack of progress in school to call and set up an appointment. Ryan likes all of his teachers at Sylvan. They listen to him and help him work through the skills. I value your service to my child. Thank you!"

Two-point increase in ACT Score worth $37,500

By: Rick McCrabb- Columnist

SPRINGBORO- For Gary Kurtz, the reward was much greater than the risk.

When daughter, Marissa, 17, a senior at Springboro High School, scored a 29 on the ACT college entrance exam, she earned a one-year tuition scholarship to attend Lee University, a small Christian school in Cleveland, Tenn.

Later, the Kurtz family learned if Marissa scored a 31 of a possible 36, she'd earn a four-year scholarship, valued at $50,000.

"A 31," Gary Kurtz said, "gets you a lot."

So Marissa studied on her own, retook the test, figuring she'd score higher.

Instead she scored a 27.

"I was disappointed," she said.

It was time for a gamble.

Gary Kurtz, a CPA, Realtor, certified financial planner and all-around number cruncher, enrolled Mariss in a six-week, Sylvan Learning course that cost $650.

"We decided to roll the dice," Kurtz said. "If I was going to bet $650 for a chance to win $50,000, and Marissa was my horse, it was worth the wager."

His horse ran like Secretariat.

Marissa took the test for a third time, and scored a 31, earning a four-year scholarship.

What was her reaction to the two-point increase worth an additional $37,500?

"She jumped up and started crying," her father said. "She was emotionally drained."

She added: "It was such a relief."

She must maintain a 3.7 GPA to retain the scholarship.

Marissa, who carries a 4.0 grade point average, will major in middle school education and hopes to teach science and math.

She must be good with numbers.

Just like her dad.
