Meet the Tutors
Our Sylvan trained and certified tutors are dedicated to your child’s success. Working together with you, we will:
- Pinpoint your child’s learning needs using the Sylvan Skills Assessment®
- Develop a personalized learning plan based on your child’s goals
- Offer unique insights about what will work for your child
- Teach each lesson the way your child learns best
- Build a relationship with your child to provide learning that’s fun, engaging and rewarding

The Sylvan Teachers
Aside from previous working experience and/or accreditation, our Sylvan teachers have been trained by the Directors in each centre and Sylvan's programmes and their delivery. Each teacher is required to complete and master tests on each programme in his or her area of expertise. In addition, the teachers' methods are evaluated and observed by the Directors at the centre on an ongoing basis.
Kristi Duncan-Ash
Executive Director/Owner
Kristi became involved with Sylvan in 1991. She and her sister purchased their first territory and opened their first centre in Durham region. She spent 15 years expanding by opening new centres, purchasing new territories and managing other centres. During May 1999 Kristi opened her Aurora location.
In 2005, Kristi gave birth to her third child and sold a number of centres to spend more time with her family. She continues to own and operate the Aurora centre.
Joanne Muench
Centre Director
Joanne has lived in York Region for 12 years and has been active in the community both professionally and with her volunteer work. She has a teaching certificate and experience teaching English as a Second Language. She has been working in the tutoring industry tor several years.
