Success Stories

Emily's Success Story!

"When Emily "passed" grade 1 she was not at a grade 1 reading level. She was more in the range of kindergarten. We thought continuing her reading through the summer would help her but it unfortunately didn't.

The end of August 2007 we decided to place her with Sylvan Learning. After a testing session with the staff at Sylvan it was proven that Emily was indeed far behind. She began 2 classes a week for 2 hours each. We were concerned about her not wanting to go to Sylvan after a full day at school, however that was and is never a problem!

They have a token system to encourage the children which made Emily very excited to learn. Eight months later she is still excited! It has also helped that Emily has a wonderful teacher at Sylvan who she is very fond of. Donna is very supportive, encouraging and positive with Emily as well as with us.

Emily completed the beginning reading program in April. There is a huge difference in her abilities, confidence, reading, writing and comprehension. Not only are we very proud of her but she is as well.

My husband and I are always well informed on Emily's progress through award certificates, conferences and verbal converstaions with Sylvan staff.

Since we have had such great progress with Emily at Sylvan we intend on keeping her enrolled. That way she's ahead of the game for grade 3!"

Tyson Loves Learning!

"Tyson struggled at the beginning of the Grade 1 school year. His confidence level was so low that he was scared to start school before September came. Tyson thought he wasn’t “smart enough” to enter Grade 1. By the first report card in November ’07 he was not yet reading at a grade 1 level. He was frustrated and discouraged with school and himself. In January ’08 he was enrolled in the Sylvan program and the next report card came (March) with vast improvement.

His attitude towards school and learning changed as did his confidence level. Tyson has never complained about going to Sylvan 3 days a week. He goes Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and looks forward to learning new things. Tyson had very low self-esteem towards himself at school. He had already given up on himself before entering Sylvan.

Tyson has made leaps and bounds. His first report card was modified in the Language Arts reading portion and by his second report card it was no longer modified and he was rated average to above average. Tyson now feels he cannot miss a session at Sylvan because that would make him “miss a day of learning.” Those are Tyson’s words. I gave Tyson a free day – no activities and no Sylvan. He was so upset, not at missing baseball but at missing his Sylvan session.

Tyson is so much more confident with himself at school and says that he is proud at what he can do. He now loves to read."

Positive Changes for Amanda!

"Amanda was struggling with achieving grade level in grade 3 Language Arts (specifically reading and reading comprehension). The more Amanda struggled to keep up to the class, the more shy and withdrawn she became. As her mom I could sense a sadness in her when she spoke about school and how it was going, even though she would tell me it was all okay.

After her second report card I realized how deeply this difficulty with reading had affected Amanda. The student the teacher was speaking about was not the same kid I knew Amanda to be. I realized her difficulty reading had affected her self-esteem significantly. It was then I brought her to Sylvan.

Over the past 4-5 months Amanda has become more confident and self-assured. This was noticed by me, and also by her grade school teacher. She is reading aloud in class, participating in discussions and using more details in her writings.

Amanda just received her report card and is now achieving at grade level in LA and she is so proud of her improvement.

She has enjoyed her time at Sylvan and has really excelled with the style of teaching employed at Sylvan She had really enjoyed her teacher (Marcie) and was always happy to come to Sylvan."
