Senior Math
Sylvan's custom-designed Senior Math program helps high school students who are struggling or who are trying to get ahead. Integrating concepts from algebra, geometry, and trigonometry, Senior Math helps students develop or enhance skills in areas such as patterns and functions, graphing and problem solving. Students are encouraged to develop critical thinking skills by solving non-routine problems to develop mathematical connections and reasoning skills. Including options for homework support and provincial exam preparation, Senior Math is tailored to fit each unique student.
Reading
Academic Reading
Reading skills are critical for success in every facet of life and reading provides the foundation for every subject at school. Sylvan's Academic Reading program, designed for students in Grade Two through Grade Twelve, not only concentrates on basic skills such as phonics, vocabulary and comprehension, but also introduces higher level critical thinking skills that enable students to synthesize information and analyze literary and factual texts.
Writing
Sylvan Academic Writing
Academic Writing is taught at a variety of levels from Grade Two through to university entrance preparation. Aimed at enhancing writing skills, the program teaches a process approach to writing paragraphs and essays, while stressing the fundamentals of sentence structure, vocabulary usage, paragraph development and basic mechanics such as capitalization, spelling and punctuation. Developing students' abilities to think critically about their own writing through a structured revision and editing process, the program also teaches students to write for a variety of purposes including descriptive writing and persuasive writing. By teaching students how to write clearly and logically, Sylvan gives students a competitive advantage and develops their confidence in regards to taking examinations.
Study Skills
Sylvan Study Skills
Sylvan Study Skills is designed for students who perform at grade level, but need effective study techniques, organizational skills, time management skills and test taking strategies. The program includes reading and listening skills as well as outlining, note-taking, test-taking and memorization strategies.This program has as prerequisite for entrance, and is designed for students who are achieving passing grades, but are motivated to improve their current average and class standing.
