Meet the Tutors
Our Sylvan trained and certified tutors are dedicated to your child’s success. Working together with you, we will:
- Pinpoint your child’s learning needs using the Sylvan Skills Assessment®
- Develop a personalized learning plan based on your child’s goals
- Offer unique insights about what will work for your child
- Teach each lesson the way your child learns best
- Build a relationship with your child to provide learning that’s fun, engaging and rewarding
Roger Shore
Executive Director
Roger is a former classroom teacher with experience in grades K-8. Following his teaching career, Roger received a master's degree in clinical psychology and worked in private practice as a marriage, family and child counselor specializing in families and school related problems. He opened the Cupertino Sylvan Learning Center in 1993, the Center in San Jose in 1994 and the Mt. View Center in 2000.
Mary Catherine Kuhn
Center Director
Director B.A., Sonoma State University
Mary Catherine Kuhn spent a total of 15 years in public education before working for Sylvan as an instructor in January 2000, and then a Center Director in August that same year. As a struggling student who overcame her problem areas, she has a keen insight into helping children. When asked what she likes most about her job, she says it is “that look on a student’s face when he or she realizes that something new has been learned.”
Wendy Aftowicz
Director of Education
Wendy earned her BA in Child and Adolescent Development with a concentration in School Age Children and Family from San Francisco State University. She received her Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from San Jose State University then went on to teach Elementary School. She joined Sylvan in the summer of 2010 and really enjoys it! In her spare time, Wendy loves to read; particularly historical fiction novels and the Harry Potter series.
