Theresa Slater

Center Director

Theresa is a certified teacher who got her Bachelors’ of Science degree in Sports Medicine from Washington State University and her teaching credentials from Central Washington University. Before working at Sylvan, Theresa taught sports medicine, ASB, and Leadership at Lake Stevens High School from 1995 – 2000. What sold her on the Sylvan program was watching the students not only pick up the skills, but build confidence in themselves and their skills.

Jessica Hudson

Director of Education

Jessica earned a degree in Early Childhood Education at the State University of Cortland College in New York. Prior to Sylvan she has taught Pre-Kindergarten for 3 years. Jessica moved to Washington in June of 2007 after living in New York for 26 years. She enjoys working for Sylvan because it is very rewarding to see the progress that children make in their programs. In her free time she enjoys scrapbooking and taking road trips. She lives in Everett with her husband and step-son!

Lisa Newsum

Instructor, Lead Test Administrator

Lisa completed a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Biological Sciences through Chico State University. After giving nature tours in the San Francisco Bay Area, she returned to CSUC in 1991 to get her teaching credential. She enjoys the close instructional environment of Sylvan. Her favorite hobbies include gemology, Nature-Watching, forensic sciences, cooking, walking with her dog, being entertained by cartoons on late-night television, and laughing with her husband.

Laina Hall

Lead Instructor

Laina has worked at Sylvan for three years. She enjoys working with the Academic Reading, Beginning Reading, and Writing students. Working with a 3:1 ratio is something that she enjoys and loves about Sylvan. She feels that she can truly help make a difference in the lives of these students because of the environment at Sylvan.

Laina has a BA in English Teaching from Brigham Young University.

She enjoys reading, sewing, taking walks, and cooking.

Karen Knickerbocker

Call Center Director

Karen has counseled with families in need for the past twenty years. Working with families calling Sylvan and helping them find good solutions to their educational concerns was a natural transition for her. Karen has four children and has experienced first hand the questions and concerns that parents can have about their child’s education. Karen enjoys reading, teaching and watching classic films, and working with families at the church that she and her husband Chris help pastor.

Michele Henley

Michele has worked at Sylvan for 18 years. She is very dedicated to Sylvan. She teaches Academic Reading, Writing, Math Essentials, Beginning Reading and Study Skills. She graduated from the University of San Diego and grew up in California. Michele enjoys reading, traveling and yoga.

Anne Hirning

Anne has been one of our teachers since the beginning of 2011. She teaches Math Essentials, Advanced Math and Academic Reading. Anne graduated from SPU in 2008 and earned a degree in Special Education. Anne also has a MBA in Finance from UPS. Anne thoroughly enjoys working with the students at Sylvan. She has four grown children of her own.

Lisa Brunkhorst

Lisa has been a part of Sylvan since 2007. She started at the Kent Center and joined us in Everett in 2010. Lisa teaches Beginning Reading, Academic Reading and Math Essentials. She attended Central Washington University where she earned her Bachelors Degree in Education. Lisa lives with her husband and twin girls Ella and Madison.

Julie Roberts

Julie has been one of our Sylvan teachers since 2004. She grew up in Southern California and received her degree from San Diego State University. Julie teaches Academic Reading, Academic Writing, Beginning Reading and Math Essentials. She loves seeing the progress the students make at Sylvan, plus she likes being part of a great staff. Julie is married with two children. She is a huge Harry Potter fan.

Amy Stapey

Amy is a teacher. She is a Washington native born in Seattle, and raised in Kenmore. She graduated from Shoreline C.C. and W.S.U, and is currently enrolled at City U. of Seattle. She teaches Math Essentials, Academic Reading, Beginning Reading here at Sylvan and helps with our Homework Help program. She enjoys all the smiling students that attend class each day.

Anne McSwain

Anne is a teacher here at Sylvan. She grew up in Ohio and then moved to Washington where she attended both Central Washington University and U of W. She teaches Beginning Reading, Academic Reading, and Academic writing here at Sylvan. Ann loves watching the students’ progress!

Shawn Manzer

Shawn is a veteran member of our staff and has been here for 8+ years. He moved to Washington from Grants Pass Oregon and attended Eastern Washington University. Shawn teaches all of our Sylvan subjects and helps with testing. Shawn loves it when students ask for him by name, and when he sees the spark of understanding light the eyes of one of his students.

Mitch Meyers

Mitch is a teacher. He comes to us from Sacramento, California. He teaches English and Math in public school and teaches Academic Reading, Academic Writing and Math Essentials for us at Sylvan. He likes the friendly students and staff here at Sylvan.

Heidi Vaighn

Heidi has been teaching at Sylvan since 2010. She teaches Beginning Reading and Academic Reading. Heidi graduated from Santa Clara University with a B.S degree and then continued her education at SPU where she earned her Masters Degree in 2008. She grew up in Shoreline, WA. Heidi loves to read mystery/horror books, watch movies and spend time with her family and friends. She lives in Lynnwood with her husband.
